Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan are recovering from injuries as India prepares for the Test series against Sri Lanka.

With the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign set to resume, Team India is closely monitoring the fitness of several key players ahead of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

Captain Shubman Gill, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and young batter Sai Sudharsan are all recovering from different injury concerns, although the latest reports suggest there is optimism within the Indian camp.

Shubman Gill Managing Recurring Neck Problem

According to reports, India captain Shubman Gill is continuing to deal with a recurring neck issue that has troubled him over the past year.

The problem first surfaced during the Test series against South Africa, forcing Gill to miss the second Test. It reportedly resurfaced during IPL 2026, where he had to sit out a match because of discomfort.

Reports suggest the pain generally returns after long batting sessions, prompting Gill to seek advice from medical specialists outside the BCCI‘s regular support staff in an effort to better manage the condition.

Despite the concern, there is no indication that the injury will rule him out of the Sri Lanka series.

Jasprit Bumrah Progressing Well

India have also received encouraging news regarding Jasprit Bumrah.

The star fast bowler is recovering from the knee injury he sustained after being struck during the second ODI against England, an injury that forced him to miss the final match of the series due to swelling.

According to reports, Bumrah is expected to resume bowling later this week as part of his rehabilitation programme.

The Indian team management remains hopeful that he will gradually increase his workload and be fit for the opening Test in Galle, scheduled to begin on August 15.

Sai Sudharsan Nearing Return

Young left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan is also making steady progress.

He suffered a hamstring injury while representing India A against Sri Lanka A, but recent assessments by the BCCI medical team have reportedly been positive.

Sudharsan is expected to restart batting practice at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru next week as he continues his recovery.

Practice Match Planned Before Test Series

India will play a four-day practice match in Colombo before the Test series gets underway.

However, reports indicate that neither Bumrah nor Sudharsan is expected to feature in the warm-up fixture.

The team management is believed to be prioritising their availability for the first Test rather than taking unnecessary risks before the series begins.
