‘We Signed Shah Rukh Khan for just Rs 11,000’: Deewana producer Guddu Dhanoa reveals untold story behind SRK’s bollywood debut

More than 33 years after ‘Deewana’ changed the course of Hindi cinema, producer Guddu Dhanoa has shared fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about the film that introduced Shah Rukh Khan to Bollywood. From an unexpected casting change to a modest signing amount of Rs 11,000, the producer revealed several lesser-known details that shaped one of Indian cinema’s biggest success stories.

Released in 1992, ‘Deewana’ featured Rishi Kapoor, Divya Bharti, and a young Shah Rukh Khan. The romantic drama emerged as a blockbuster and marked the beginning of SRK’s extraordinary journey to becoming one of India’s biggest film stars.

How Shah Rukh Khan Entered ‘Deewana’

Guddu Dhanoa revealed that Shah Rukh was never the original choice for the film. Initially, Armaan Kohli had been cast, but he exited the project following issues that arose during production.

With the film suddenly without one of its lead actors, Dhanoa found himself searching for a replacement. At the time, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur suggested the name of a young television actor who had impressed audiences in ‘Fauji’ and ‘Circus’—Shah Rukh Khan.

Although Dhanoa had watched SRK on television, he didn’t immediately recognise him. Curious, he travelled to New Delhi along with director Raj Kanwar to meet the aspiring actor.

The Rs 11,000 Signing Amount That Started a Legend

During their first meeting, Shah Rukh explained that he was already committed to several films, including ‘Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’, ‘Dil Aashna Hai’, ‘Chamatkar’, ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’, and ‘King Uncle’.

However, after listening to the complete narration of ‘Deewana’, especially the second half where his character takes centre stage, Shah Rukh immediately agreed to be part of the project.

Guddu Dhanoa recalled that he signed the actor by paying him Rs 8,000 in cash and a cheque of Rs 3,000, making the total signing amount Rs 11,000.

A few days later, Shah Rukh informed the team that one of his schedules had been cancelled, giving him a 20-day window. The makers wasted no time and began shooting immediately, completing his portion smoothly within the available dates.

A Perfect Team Comes Together

Dhanoa also remembered the excellent chemistry between Rishi Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan despite sharing only a handful of scenes together. He praised the atmosphere on set and credited the film’s memorable music as one of the biggest reasons behind its phenomenal success.

The producer also spoke fondly about Divya Bharti, recalling her remarkable professionalism. He revealed that while filming the iconic song ‘Aisi Deewangi’ in Shimla, the actress was running a fever of 104 degrees Celsius, yet continued shooting with remarkable energy and dedication.

Why ‘Deewana’ Is Being Upgraded

More than three decades after its release, Guddu Dhanoa has decided to give the classic film a technical upgrade by remastering its sound in Dolby Atmos.

He shared that while cleaning his storeroom, he unexpectedly discovered the original international sound tapes of the film, safely stored in old trunks. After the tapes were tested and found to be in good condition, he decided to preserve the film’s legacy by enhancing its audio quality for future generations.

Although there are currently no confirmed plans for a theatrical re-release, Dhanoa believes ‘Deewana’ remains a milestone not only in his own career but also in Shah Rukh Khan’s journey and the history of Bollywood itself.

The producer also revealed that he had previously received offers to sell the remake rights of the film but chose not to part with them, considering the emotional value the project holds for him.

Over three decades later, the story of ‘Deewana’ continues to fascinate fans—not only because it introduced a future superstar but because it reminds everyone that even the biggest legends often begin with humble opportunities.
