India batter Sanju Samson found himself on the wrong side of the record books during the first T20I against Ireland on Sunday, June 28, after suffering a first-ball dismissal that resulted in an unwanted milestone.
The stylish right-hander became the first Indian batter in T20 International history to lose his wicket on the very first ball of an innings on two separate occasions. While several Indian batters have previously been dismissed off the opening delivery of a T20I innings, none had experienced the setback twice before Samson.
The dismissal came early in India’s innings when Ireland’s left-arm pacer Jai Moondra produced a probing delivery that pitched on a straight line and moved slightly inward. Samson, attempting to assess the movement, failed to get fully behind the ball as it struck him on the front pad.

DRS Could Not Save Samson
The on-field umpire wasted little time in raising his finger for an LBW decision. Samson appeared visibly surprised and immediately opted for a review, hoping technology would overturn the verdict.
However, the Decision Review System (DRS) confirmed the umpire’s call. Ball-tracking showed the delivery crashing into the stumps, with the screen displaying three reds, leaving the batter with no option but to walk back to the pavilion without scoring.
The moment left both fans and commentators stunned, especially considering Samson’s importance in India’s T20 setup and his reputation as an aggressive top-order batter.
A Record No Batter Wants
Before Samson’s latest dismissal, notable Indian cricketers such as KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Prithvi Shaw, and Abhishek Sharma had all been dismissed on the first ball of a T20I innings at least once. However, none of them suffered the same fate twice.
The latest setback means Samson now holds a unique and unwanted record in Indian cricket history.
Looking Beyond the Disappointment
Despite the embarrassing statistic, Samson remains one of India’s most talented white-ball players. Cricket is often a game of fine margins, and even the best batters can endure difficult moments.
The 31-year-old will now be eager to bounce back in the remaining matches of the series and silence critics with a strong performance. Given his ability to change games within a few overs, India will continue to back the wicketkeeper-batter to rediscover his rhythm quickly.
