Sanju Samson Pulls Out of Kerala Cricket League 2026… Here’s Why the Star Wicketkeeper Won’t Feature This Season

In a major setback for cricket fans in Kerala, Sanju Samson will not participate in the 2026 edition of the Kerala Cricket League (KCL). The star wicketkeeper-batter has informed both the Kochi Blue Tigers (KBT) franchise and the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) that he will be unavailable for the tournament due to prior personal commitments.

As a result, Samson’s name was absent from the franchise’s retention list and did not appear in the auction pool ahead of the league’s third season.

Kochi Blue Tigers Release Their Biggest Star

Last season, Kochi Blue Tigers had made headlines by signing Sanju Samson for a record ₹26.80 lakh, making him one of the league’s biggest attractions.

Although he featured in only three matches, Samson made a significant impact with the bat, scoring 221 runs while playing under the captaincy of his brother, Saly Samson. His performances added star power to the tournament and attracted large attention from fans across the state.

This year, however, the franchise had little choice but to release him after being informed of his unavailability well before the auction.

KCL Confirms the Reason Behind His Absence

Confirming the development, Nazar Machan, Chairman of the KCL Governing Council, stated that Samson had already informed both the franchise and the Kerala Cricket Association about his inability to take part in the upcoming season.

According to the league officials, Samson’s absence is purely due to prior commitments, and there are no disciplinary or cricket-related issues behind the decision.

The KCL management also acknowledged that while losing a player of Samson’s stature is disappointing, the tournament has continued to grow in popularity and is expected to deliver another exciting season.

A Challenging Phase for Sanju Samson

Samson’s decision comes shortly after he missed out on India’s latest T20 International plans, adding to what has been a challenging period in his career.

During the previous KCL season, Samson was working hard to cement his place in India’s T20I setup ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup. However, changes in the national team’s batting order saw him shifted to the middle order, while Shubman Gill was promoted as vice-captain and designated opener.

Despite recent setbacks, Samson remains one of India’s most talented wicketkeeper-batters and continues to be a key figure in domestic and franchise cricket.
