Ravi Ashwin backs India’s decision to delay Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s debut, urging patience over pressure.

The debate around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s much-anticipated India debut continues to gather momentum, but former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has stepped in with a strong message—patience over hype.

The 15-year-old sensation, who earned a national call-up after a sensational run in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League 2026, was widely expected to feature in the opening T20I against Ireland. However, the team management opted to stick with their proven opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, leaving the youngster on the sidelines.

Ashwin’s Clear Message: “Think With Wisdom”

Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin didn’t mince words while addressing the growing calls for Sooryavanshi’s immediate inclusion.

“Please, everyone, think about the game with some wisdom. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opened together, and Sanju batted very well in the World Cup. If you bench one of them to play Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, what is the point of calling this a team game?”

His remarks underline a crucial point—team balance and performance consistency cannot be compromised purely for introducing new talent, no matter how promising.

Learning Before Leading

Ashwin emphasized that there is “immense value in learning from the sidelines”, especially for a teenager stepping into the high-pressure world of international cricket.

Rather than rushing Sooryavanshi into the Playing XI, the veteran believes that observing senior players, understanding match situations, and adapting to the team environment will better prepare him for long-term success.

India’s Shock Defeat Adds Pressure

Interestingly, the debate intensified after India, led by Shreyas Iyer, suffered a surprising defeat to Ireland in the first T20I—marking their first-ever loss to the side in the format.

The match also carried added significance as it was India’s first T20I outing since their World Cup triumph, making the loss even more unexpected.

While some fans pointed to Sooryavanshi’s absence as a missed opportunity, others agreed with Ashwin’s perspective that team decisions must be based on collective strength rather than individual hype.

A Star in Waiting

There is little doubt that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is one of India’s brightest young prospects. His fearless batting and maturity beyond his years have already set him apart.

However, as Ashwin suggests, timing could be just as important as talent. Giving the youngster space to grow without overwhelming expectations might ultimately benefit both the player and the team.

What Next?

With another match remaining in the series, the spotlight will once again be on India’s team selection. Whether Sooryavanshi gets his long-awaited debut or continues to wait, one thing is certain—his moment is coming, and the cricketing world is watching closely.
