The Afghanistan cricket family witnessed one of its most heartbreaking moments as players gathered to bid a final farewell to former fast bowler Shapoor Zadran, whose passing has left the sporting community in deep mourning.

Heart-wrenching visuals from the farewell ceremony showed Rashid Khan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, and several current and former Afghanistan cricketers struggling to hold back tears while paying their last respects to their former teammate. The emotional scenes reflected not only the loss of a respected cricketer but also of a mentor and friend who inspired an entire generation.

Shapoor Zadran passed away in New Delhi on Tuesday at the age of 38 after a prolonged battle with a rare and life-threatening medical condition known as haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). The disease causes severe inflammation and can affect vital organs including the liver, spleen, bone marrow, and lymph nodes.

The former left-arm pacer had been undergoing advanced treatment in India for several months. According to reports, his health began deteriorating late last year, prompting doctors to recommend specialised medical care. With assistance from Rashid Khan and Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Chairman Mirwais Ashraf, his medical visa was expedited, allowing him to begin treatment in New Delhi earlier this year.

Although Zadran initially responded positively to treatment, his condition became increasingly critical due to repeated infections, dengue fever, and a significant drop in his red blood cell count. He remained in the intensive care unit for an extended period before eventually succumbing to the illness.

Throughout his international career, Shapoor Zadran represented Afghanistan with passion and determination. Between 2009 and 2020, he featured in 44 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 36 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He played a crucial role during Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket and was widely respected for his commitment and fighting spirit.

Former Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan reportedly travelled frequently between Dubai and New Delhi to support his former teammate during his treatment. The board further extended its deepest condolences to Zadran’s family, friends, teammates and cricket fans, stating that his memory would continue to live on in the hearts of people across Afghanistan and the global cricket community.

As tributes continue to pour in from players and fans around the world, Shapoor Zadran’s legacy goes far beyond statistics. He will be remembered as one of the cricketers who helped shape modern Afghanistan cricket and inspired hope through both his performances and his unwavering determination.

His passing marks the end of a remarkable journey, but his contribution to Afghan cricket will remain unforgettable for years to come.
