Nitish Kumar Reddy emerges as India’s potential all-round solution amid Hardik Pandya’s absence

In a significant development for Indian cricket’s future, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has identified young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy as the leading candidate to step in as a backup—and possibly successor—to Hardik Pandya in the ODI format.

Speaking in a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, ten Doeschate highlighted the growing importance of seam-bowling all-rounders in modern cricket, especially as India prepares for future global tournaments.

“A Rare Skillset…” – Why Hardik Is Irreplaceable (For Now)

Ten Doeschate made it clear that replacing Hardik Pandya is no easy task.
“When Hardik is fit, he brings a completely different element… he’s such a strong batter, such a strong finisher. It’s a rare role—it’s difficult to find a finisher who can also give you overs,” he explained.

Hardik’s ability to balance explosive batting with effective seam bowling has made him one of India’s most valuable limited-overs assets. However, with the star all-rounder currently sidelined due to a quadriceps injury, the team management has been forced to explore alternatives.

Nitish Kumar Reddy: The Emerging Answer

Among the emerging names, Nitish Kumar Reddy has stood out with consistent performances and visible improvement.
“For the last 18 months, he has shown glimpses of how important he can be… his body’s getting stronger, and I feel he is the natural successor or backup to Hardik,” ten Doeschate stated.

This endorsement signals strong confidence from the team management and could mark the beginning of a long-term transition plan in India’s ODI setup.

Why India Need Pace-Bowling All-Rounders More Than Ever

Looking ahead to the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, team composition will play a crucial role.

Conditions in South Africa are known to favour fast bowlers, which may push India to field three specialist seamers. In such a scenario, lower-order batting depth becomes critical.

Ten Doeschate pointed to players like Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey as valuable contributors.
“Even if they’re bowling all-rounders, the fact that they can hold the bat at number nine is going to be very important,” he noted.

India’s Pace Battery Growing Stronger

India’s ongoing ODI series against Afghanistan national cricket team has also served as a testing ground for emerging fast bowlers.

Ten Doeschate expressed excitement over new talents like Prince Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, and Auqib Nabi.
“All of a sudden, the cupboard of seamers is very full, which is a great sign for this team,” he said.

A Glimpse Into India’s Future Core

As India builds towards the next World Cup cycle, the focus is clearly on developing multi-dimensional players who can adapt to challenging conditions.

While Hardik Pandya remains irreplaceable at his peak, the emergence of Nitish Kumar Reddy offers hope that India may soon have a reliable alternative ready.

And if early signs are anything to go by, the transition might already be underway.
