MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV launched at Rs 25.69 lakh but its 1,100km+ combined range could be the real game-changer…

JSW MG Motor India has expanded its electrified SUV portfolio with the launch of the new MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV, priced from Rs 25.69 lakh (ex-showroom).

Launched alongside the fully electric Hector Tomahawk EV, the new plug-in hybrid is being positioned as India’s first PHEV in the mainstream SUV segment. Bookings have opened, while customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in November 2026.

The SUV is available exclusively as a seven-seater, combining the flexibility of a petrol engine with an electric powertrain designed to handle a significant portion of everyday driving without using fuel.

115km+ on electricity, over 1,100km combined

The headline figure is the claimed electric-only driving range.

The Hector Tomahawk PHEV packs a 20.5kWh battery, which MG says can provide more than 115km of all-electric range. With the battery fully charged and its 52-litre petrol tank filled, the SUV’s claimed combined driving range rises to more than 1,100km.

Final range certification, however, is still awaited.

Under the bonnet is a dedicated 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, producing 102Bhp and 125Nm. It works alongside a permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor developing 201Bhp and 237Nm.

MG claims 43.2% thermal efficiency for the hybrid petrol engine and 98.8% transmission efficiency for its dedicated hybrid transmission.

Six drive modes decide how petrol and electric power are used

Instead of relying on a single hybrid operating strategy, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV offers six drive modes.

Pure EV allows the vehicle to run using battery power alone, while Series Hybrid uses the petrol engine to generate electricity as the motor drives the SUV. Parallel Hybrid combines the engine and motor when additional performance is required.

There are also Regeneration, Pure Engine, and Engine Drive + Charge modes, allowing the system to recover energy, directly use the petrol engine or simultaneously drive and recharge the battery depending on conditions.

This flexibility could make the PHEV particularly useful for owners who want electric commuting during the week without depending entirely on charging infrastructure for longer highway journeys.

How long does the battery take to charge?

The 20.5kWh battery supports a CCS2 charging connection.

MG claims a 10-100% charge takes around 7.5 hours using a 3.3kW AC charger. With a compatible 25kW DC fast charger, a 30-80% charge can take approximately 35 minutes.

The maximum supported DC charging rate is 25kW.

According to the company, the battery system has undergone more than 2,000 bench tests and over 490 vehicle-level tests, including evaluation under extreme operating conditions.

Seven seats and plenty of space

Unlike the electric Hector Tomahawk, which offers both five- and seven-seat configurations, the PHEV is exclusively a three-row, seven-seat SUV.

It measures 4,745mm long, 1,850mm wide and 1,770mm tall, with a 2,810mm wheelbase.

Boot capacity stands at 192 litres with all three rows being used. Folding the third row expands luggage capacity to 528 litres.

The SUV rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and uses a MacPherson strut suspension at the front with a multi-link independent suspension at the rear.

A massive touchscreen dominates the cabin

MG has loaded the Hector Tomahawk PHEV with technology, including a 39.6cm (15.6-inch) Grand View touchscreen, which the company claims is the largest display in its segment.

It is accompanied by another 32.5cm (12.8-inch) touchscreen, an Infinity premium audio system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Other highlights include a panoramic cockpit sunroof, ventilated front seats, a powered tailgate and a six-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory.

MG’s i-SMART connected-car technology adds a Gen AI-powered voice assistant, more than 30 Hinglish voice commands, remote air-conditioning and lock controls, scheduled charging, charging-station search and over-the-air updates.

The entertainment package also includes Starmaanch Karaoke, Jio Sphere, Jio Games, online music and other connected services, with access to more than 8,000 karaoke tracks.

Level 2 ADAS and six airbags

Safety equipment is extensive, with six airbags as standard, electronic stability control, traction control, hill-hold assist, ABS with EBD, brake assist, four-wheel disc brakes, tyre-pressure monitoring and an electronic parking brake with auto hold.

The SUV also receives a Level 2 ADAS package offering 11 functions.

These include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian AEB, traffic jam assist and intelligent headlamp control.

Parking assistance includes front and rear sensors, a reverse camera and a 360-degree HD camera with transparent-chassis and wheel-view functions.

MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV price: Two variants available

The Exclusive variant has been priced at Rs 25.69 lakh, while the more feature-rich Essence variant costs Rs 27.79 lakh, both ex-showroom.

MG is also offering its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme for private buyers.

Under BaaS, the Exclusive costs Rs 21.79 lakh, while the Essence is priced at Rs 23.89 lakh. Customers then pay a separate battery rental charge of Rs 3.20 per kilometre, excluding electricity costs and other applicable charges.

MG sweetens the ownership package

MG is offering three years of unlimited vehicle warranty, three years of roadside assistance and three labour-free services.

The first private owner also gets a lifetime warranty on the high-voltage battery, subject to the company’s applicable terms and conditions.

With a claimed 115km+ EV range, over 1,100km of combined driving range, seven seats and the flexibility of a petrol engine for long-distance journeys, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV attempts to occupy the middle ground between traditional petrol SUVs and fully electric vehicles.

For buyers still worried about EV charging on long journeys but keen to handle their everyday commute largely on electricity, that combination could be the Tomahawk PHEV’s strongest selling point.
