Meghan Markle gave fans a rare glimpse into her parenting style during a surprise appearance on MasterChef Australia, revealing the simple but effective dessert rule she follows with her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The Duchess of Sussex appeared as a guest judge alongside Poh Ling Yeow, Sofia Levin, and Jean-Christophe Novelli in an episode that aired on Sunday. Filmed earlier this year during a visit to Australia, the episode featured Meghan discussing everything from healthy eating to family life at her home in Montecito, California.

Archie and Lilibet enjoy vegetables most children avoid

During a conversation with the judges, Meghan revealed that her two children are surprisingly adventurous eaters.

“My kids eat Brussels sprouts,” she said, drawing amused and impressed reactions from those on set.

She added that both Archie and Lilibet generally enjoy healthy meals, describing herself and Prince Harry as fortunate parents when it comes to their children’s eating habits.

“The kids are great eaters; we’re very lucky on that front,” Meghan shared.

The dessert rule: Fruit first, not chocolate

While the royal children are allowed to enjoy dessert, Meghan explained that there’s one non-negotiable rule in the household.

According to the Duchess, whenever Archie or Lilibet asks for dessert, the answer depends on what they choose.

“If they say, ‘Mama, can I have dessert?’ We say, ‘If you can pick it, you can have it,'” Meghan explained.

She then clarified the family guideline with a smile.

“No, you can’t pick chocolate, but you can pick a nice piece of fruit.”

The parenting approach reflects the family’s emphasis on encouraging healthier food choices without completely turning dessert into a forbidden treat.

Prince Harry makes a surprise appearance

The episode also included a light-hearted moment involving Prince Harry.

As Meghan sampled a dish prepared by contestant Aaron Kher, she complimented the flavours but joked that the spice level would likely be too much for her husband.

Harry briefly joined the show through a phone call, greeting the judges with a cheerful “G’Day” before exchanging a few friendly words.

After ending the call, Meghan laughed and remarked, “He’s a charmer, isn’t he?”

A candid look into royal family life

Although Meghan and Harry have largely kept details about their family life private since stepping back from royal duties, the MasterChef Australia appearance offered viewers a rare insight into everyday moments inside their California home.

From encouraging vegetables at the dinner table to replacing chocolate with fresh fruit, Meghan’s comments highlighted a parenting philosophy focused on balance, healthy habits, and simple routines for Archie and Lilibet.
