In a significant move towards cleaner and more sustainable mobility, Maruti Suzuki India Limited has officially launched the Wagon R Bioflex at an ex-showroom price of ₹7.24 lakh. The new model is designed to run on higher ethanol fuel blends and represents another step in India’s broader effort to reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels.

However, while the announcement has generated excitement among environmentally conscious motorists, there is a notable catch: the Wagon R Bioflex will be sold exclusively to commercial buyers, leaving private customers out of the initial rollout.

A Greener Wagon R, But at a Premium

The newly launched Bioflex variant is based on the top-end Maruti Suzuki Wagon R ZXi+ 1.2-litre manual trim.

Compared to the standard Wagon R ZXi+ variant, the Bioflex version carries a premium of approximately ₹86,000.

The price difference stems largely from the engineering changes required to make the vehicle compatible with ethanol-rich fuels. While the standard model is already known for its practicality and fuel efficiency, the Bioflex aims to add environmental benefits to the package.

Interestingly, the new model is also significantly more expensive than the commercial-focused Wagon R Tour H3, which is currently available at lower price points depending on the fuel option selected.

What’s Different Under the Hood?

The biggest transformation lies beneath the bonnet.

The Wagon R Bioflex is powered by the familiar K12N 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, but Maruti Suzuki has made several modifications to ensure compatibility with higher ethanol blends.

According to the company, updates include:

  • Revised fuel injectors
  • Enhanced fuel pump
  • New fuel lines
  • Recalibrated engine control unit (ECU)
  • Dedicated ethanol sensor

These upgrades allow the engine to adapt to varying ethanol concentrations while maintaining reliability and performance.

Although Maruti Suzuki has not yet disclosed the official power output and fuel efficiency figures of the Bioflex variant, the standard 1.2-litre Wagon R generates around 91 hp and 114 Nm of torque, with a claimed fuel efficiency of 23.56 kmpl in manual transmission form.

Spot the Difference? It Won’t Be Easy

From the outside, identifying the Bioflex version may prove difficult for most people.

The hatchback retains the familiar Wagon R design that has made it one of India’s most recognizable cars. The only visual changes include dedicated “Flex Fuel” graphics on the sides and a “Bioflex” badge on the rear.

Apart from these subtle additions, the overall styling remains unchanged.

Inside the cabin, buyers will find the same dual-tone black-and-beige interior layout, fabric upholstery and practical design elements that have long been associated with the Wagon R.

Features Remain Largely Unchanged

Because the Bioflex is based on the premium ZXi+ variant, it comes loaded with several modern convenience and safety features.

The launch aligns with the Government of India‘s ambitious ethanol-blending programme aimed at reducing crude oil imports and promoting cleaner fuels.

Flex-fuel vehicles can operate using petrol blended with higher percentages of ethanol, helping lower emissions while supporting domestic agricultural industries involved in ethanol production.

Automakers across India have increasingly been exploring ethanol-compatible technologies as the country accelerates its transition towards alternative fuel solutions.

Commercial Buyers Only — For Now

Perhaps the biggest surprise surrounding the Wagon R Bioflex is its limited availability.

Despite being based on a popular passenger vehicle, Maruti Suzuki has decided to restrict sales to commercial operators during the initial phase.

While the company has not announced any plans for a retail version, industry observers believe customer response from fleet operators and commercial users could influence future decisions.

For now, private buyers eager to own India’s latest flex-fuel hatchback will have to wait and watch.

What is clear, however, is that Maruti Suzuki’s latest launch signals a growing commitment to alternative fuel technologies—and the humble Wagon R has become one of the first mainstream hatchbacks to lead that charge.
