Kris Srikkanth Slams Gautam Gambhir, Shreyas Iyer Over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Snub: “I’m So Upset…”

The handling of 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has sparked a fresh debate in Indian cricket, with former India captain Kris Srikkanth strongly criticising the team management led by head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shreyas Iyer.

The teenage prodigy, regarded as one of India’s brightest emerging talents, had a mixed tour where opportunities came in limited numbers. Sooryavanshi did not feature in any of the T20Is against Ireland and was later left out after playing just three matches during the England T20I series.

The decision has drawn sharp reactions from several cricket experts, but it was Srikkanth’s passionate criticism that grabbed the spotlight.

His criticism was particularly directed at Shreyas Iyer’s explanation before the fifth T20I, where the Indian captain defended the selection decision by saying the team wanted to identify the best combination going forward.

That reasoning, however, did not convince Srikkanth, who said he was “so upset” with the approach. He argued that while experimenting with combinations is a normal part of international cricket, promising youngsters should also be given a fair run before being judged.

The debate has once again highlighted the delicate balance between building a winning team and nurturing future stars. At just 15 years of age, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is already viewed as one of India’s most exciting cricket prospects, and many believe that consistent opportunities at the highest level could accelerate his growth.
