While the franchise has not made any official announcement, reports indicate that a final decision is expected during internal meetings scheduled for August and September, as Delhi Capitals prepare for a significant restructuring following a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign.

KL Rahul Emerges as Captaincy Favourite

According to reports, KL Rahul is currently the frontrunner to captain Delhi Capitals in the next IPL season.

Speaking on the development, RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan claimed that, based on the latest information available, Rahul is leading the race for the leadership role.

However, he also noted that the final call will only be taken after the franchise’s management completes its review later this year.

Rishabh Pant Reportedly Declines Leadership Role

The report further claims that Rishabh Pant, who recently returned to Delhi Capitals after a trade from Lucknow Super Giants, is not keen on captaining the side.

According to sources cited in the report, Pant wants to focus entirely on rediscovering his best form with the bat rather than carrying the additional responsibility of leading the team.

The report also suggests Pant had earlier expressed a desire to open the batting during his time with Lucknow Super Giants, although those plans reportedly did not materialise.

If Pant opts out of captaincy duties, Rahul would become the most experienced leadership option available within the current squad.

Delhi Capitals Set for Major Overhaul

The reported captaincy change comes amid broader structural changes within the franchise.

Following Delhi Capitals’ sixth-place finish under Axar Patel’s captaincy in IPL 2026, reports suggest JSW and Parth Jindal are expected to assume full control of the team’s cricketing operations from GMR.

The franchise is also believed to be considering changes to its coaching staff as part of preparations for the upcoming season.

The right-hander finished as Delhi Capitals’ highest run-scorer, accumulating 593 runs in 14 innings at an impressive average of 45.62 and a strike rate of 174.41.

Among his standout achievements was an unbeaten 152, the highest score of his IPL career and the first-ever 150-plus innings by an Indian batter in the tournament’s history.

Rahul also became the first player to score 1,000 IPL runs for three different franchises—Punjab Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and Delhi Capitals.

Interestingly, reports suggest Delhi Capitals had approached Rahul about taking over the captaincy midway through IPL 2026 when concerns emerged regarding Axar Patel’s leadership.

Rahul reportedly declined the offer at the time, choosing instead to concentrate on his batting.

Now, with Pant reportedly stepping away from captaincy considerations and the franchise planning significant changes ahead of IPL 2027, Rahul appears to be the leading candidate for the role.
