India’s preparations for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka have hit another obstacle, with premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah unlikely to be available unless he clears his final fitness assessment in the coming days.

The BCCI selection committee is expected to announce India’s squad on July 28, but Bumrah’s place remains uncertain after the speedster was advised to continue his rehabilitation before reporting to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for another medical evaluation. The right-arm pacer has been recovering from a knee issue that also ruled him out of the third ODI against England.

The injury concerns do not end there. Washington Sundar is expected to miss the opening Test and remains doubtful for the second, while Sai Sudharsan, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar Reddy are also recovering from injuries ahead of the Sri Lanka tour.

If Bumrah is ultimately unavailable, the selectors will need to strengthen India’s pace attack with another reliable option. Here are three bowlers who have built strong cases through consistent domestic performances and recent India A outings.

Auqib Nabi: Domestic cricket’s standout performer

Among the emerging names, Auqib Nabi has arguably made the strongest case. The Jammu & Kashmir fast bowler enjoyed a sensational domestic season, finishing as the leading wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy.

Nabi claimed an impressive 60 wickets in 17 innings while maintaining an excellent economy rate of 2.65, highlighting both his consistency and control. He also contributed valuable lower-order runs, scoring 245 runs in 12 innings at an average of 22.27.

His performances earned him a place in India’s squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan, although he is still waiting to make his international debut.

The youngster also impressed during the India A tour of Sri Lanka, taking six wickets in four innings against Sri Lanka A while maintaining an economy of 3.19. His ability to contribute with the bat further strengthens his all-round value.

Yash Thakur: Experience in Sri Lankan conditions

Another strong contender is Yash Thakur, whose recent performances have underlined his growing reputation in Indian cricket.

The Vidarbha pacer represented India in a T20I against Zimbabwe and has continued to perform consistently in domestic competitions. During the India A tour of Sri Lanka, Thakur picked up five wickets in three innings in the unofficial Test matches against Sri Lanka A with an impressive economy rate of 2.57.

He also enjoyed a productive campaign in the Sri Lanka tri-series, collecting another five wickets in three matches.

One of Thakur’s biggest strengths is his familiarity with Sri Lankan conditions. Having already bowled on those surfaces, he understands how to extract movement and maintain discipline, qualities that could prove valuable in Test cricket.

His domestic numbers further support his credentials. Thakur picked up 19 wickets in nine matches during the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy before adding 18 wickets in seven games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Mukesh Kumar: The experienced option

If the selectors prefer experience over experimentation, Mukesh Kumar could return to India’s Test setup.

Mukesh last featured in a Test during the home series against England in Visakhapatnam in February 2024. Although he has been away from the international red-ball side since then, the pacer has continued to deliver consistent performances in domestic cricket.

In the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy Elite season, Mukesh picked up 11 wickets, maintaining an economy rate of 3.26 while showcasing the discipline that has made him a dependable red-ball bowler.

Having already experienced the demands of Test cricket, Mukesh offers valuable experience and could provide stability if India’s first-choice pace attack remains unavailable.

Selection headache for BCCI

The fitness reports over the next few days will determine whether Jasprit Bumrah is available for the Sri Lanka Tests. If he fails to recover in time, the BCCI selectors will have to choose between rewarding domestic excellence, backing recent India A performers, or recalling an experienced international campaigner.

With India’s pace resources already stretched due to multiple injuries, the final squad announcement is expected to attract significant attention as the team prepares for another important overseas Test assignment.
