‘We Had No Evidence’: Jana Nayagan Director H. Vinoth breaks silence on CBFC delay ahead of Vijay’s Release
As Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited political action drama finally heads to theatres, director H. Vinoth reflects on the certification delay, unanswered questions, and the actor’s unwavering support.
After months of uncertainty and postponements, Thalapathy Vijay’s highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan is finally set to release in theatres on July 23. While fans are eagerly counting down to the premiere, director H. Vinoth has candidly spoken about the challenges the team faced during the film’s certification process with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Originally slated for a January 9, 2026 release, the political action drama was delayed after running into certification hurdles. Although the film has now received an ‘A’ (Adult Only) certificate, Vinoth admitted that the months-long wait left the makers with several unanswered questions.
“There were doubts, but no evidence”
Speaking in a recent interview, H. Vinoth said the unexpected delay came at a particularly sensitive time, as Vijay had already entered active politics.
Reflecting on the experience, the filmmaker said the team initially wondered why their film had been held up for so long. While they had their own suspicions, he clarified that they had no concrete proof to support any conclusions.
According to Vinoth, the prolonged certification process created confusion, and even today, the makers do not have clear answers about why the process took as long as it did.
Vijay stood firmly behind the team
The director also recalled the moment when Vijay personally reached out after the film failed to receive its certification during the initial stage.
Vinoth revealed that the actor reassured him not to panic and promised that the situation would eventually be resolved. He also praised the film’s producer for standing firmly beside Vijay throughout the difficult period, saying the mutual trust among the team helped them overcome the uncertainty.

Calling the entire episode a valuable learning experience, Vinoth acknowledged that the team’s unity played a crucial role in navigating the setback.
Certification controversy delayed the film
The certification issues reportedly arose after complaints alleged that certain portions of Jana Nayagan depicted religious sentiments and the Indian Armed Forces in an objectionable manner. As a result, the film was referred to a Revising Committee, leading to a significant delay in its theatrical release.

Earlier this month, the CBFC finally cleared the film with an ‘A’ certificate, paving the way for its release.
Fans await Vijay’s return to the big screen
With the release date now locked, expectations surrounding Jana Nayagan have reached a new high. The film is especially significant as it arrives after Vijay’s entry into politics, making it one of the most closely watched releases of the year.
While H. Vinoth has chosen not to directly criticise the certification authority, his remarks about the lack of clarity surrounding the delay have sparked fresh discussions among cinema lovers and industry observers.
As audiences prepare for Jana Nayagan’s theatrical debut, all eyes will now be on how the film performs after one of the most talked-about release journeys in recent Tamil cinema.
