‘We Will Act With Full Force’: Benjamin Netanyahu announces sweeping West Bank crackdown after deadly clash leaves five dead

Israel has announced a major security crackdown across the occupied West Bank after a deadly clash near the Havat Gilad settlement left one Israeli and four Palestinians dead. The violence prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to vow that the country would respond “with full force” against those responsible, while unveiling a series of new military and administrative measures.

The latest escalation comes as violence in the West Bank continues to rise alongside the ongoing Gaza conflict, which began after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

Netanyahu orders stronger security response

Following the incident, Benjamin Netanyahu held an emergency security meeting with Defence Minister Israel Katz, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, and Shin Bet chief David Zini.

After the consultation, the Israeli Prime Minister declared that security forces would “act with full force against the terrorists and those who orchestrate and sponsor them.”

The Israeli government also announced several immediate measures aimed at tightening control across the West Bank.

Israel announces expanded military operations

According to an official statement, the Israeli government plans to:

• Expand military operations in villages identified as militant strongholds.
• Deploy additional security personnel across sensitive areas.
• Establish more checkpoints throughout the occupied territory.
• Revoke work permits for residents of villages allegedly connected to the attack.
• Accelerate the legalisation of Israeli settler outposts.
• Move forward with plans to establish new settlements in the West Bank.

Officials also appealed to Israeli settlers not to interfere with military operations, saying security forces must be allowed to carry out their duties without obstruction.

How the deadly clash unfolded

The violence began near the Israeli settlement of Havat Gilad, close to the Palestinian village of Tell.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), reports initially emerged of an attack targeting Israeli civilians who were hiking in the area. The military said a Palestinian allegedly seized the weapon of a member of a civilian security team and opened fire, killing one Israeli man and injuring others before fleeing.

Israel’s emergency medical service, Magen David Adom, confirmed that a man in his 30s died in the shooting, while two other people suffered gunshot injuries, one of them seriously.

Israeli security forces later launched a search operation across the surrounding area.

Palestinian officials allege settler attack

Palestinian authorities presented a different account of the incident.

Walid Zidan, head of the Tell Village Council, claimed that around 20 Israeli settlers entered the village, triggering clashes with local residents attempting to protect their homes.

According to Palestinian officials, Israeli soldiers and settlers later opened fire during the confrontation.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said four Palestinians were killed while four others were injured, including three people who remain in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned the incident, describing it as a “massacre” allegedly carried out by settlers with the support of Israeli forces.

Independent verification of the sequence of events has not been possible, as Israeli security forces sealed off the area following the violence.

Separate violence reported in Farata

Later on the same day, Palestinian officials reported another incident in the nearby village of Farata.

Local council representatives alleged that Israeli settlers set fire to olive groves and that Israeli troops prevented residents from extinguishing the flames. Officials further claimed that five Palestinians were injured after Israeli forces opened fire during the confrontation.

Israeli authorities have not publicly commented on those specific allegations.

West Bank tensions continue to rise

The occupied West Bank has witnessed a sharp increase in violence since the outbreak of the Gaza war in 2023.

The territory, occupied by Israel since 1967, is home to nearly three million Palestinians and more than 500,000 Israeli settlers. Most of these settlements are considered illegal under international law, although Israel disputes that interpretation.

Over the past two years, repeated military raids, settler attacks, and Palestinian assaults have significantly worsened security conditions across the region.

Friday’s violence marks another chapter in the growing instability, with fears that continued confrontations could further deepen the conflict and complicate efforts to restore calm.
