‘Why Was KL Rahul Batting at No. 6?’: India’s Selection Calls Under Fire After England ODI Series Defeat

Questions are being raised over India’s batting order and team selection after the ODI series loss to England, with KL Rahul’s role, Ishan Kishan’s promotion and Shivam Dube’s inclusion emerging as major talking points.

KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Shivam Dube have come under the spotlight following India's ODI series defeat to England over batting-order and selection decisions.

India’s white-ball tour of England has sparked intense debate, with the team’s tactical decisions coming under scrutiny following a disappointing ODI series defeat. While injuries affected the visitors at crucial moments, many experts believe India’s biggest setback came from questionable selection calls and a batting order that failed to suit English conditions.

From KL Rahul batting lower down the order to Ishan Kishan’s promotion and the continued backing of Shivam Dube, several decisions have been criticised as India struggled to adapt to swing and seam-friendly pitches.

KL Rahul’s Demotion Raises Eyebrows

One of the biggest talking points from the series was the handling of KL Rahul.

Despite being one of India’s most technically accomplished batters and a proven performer in England, Rahul was pushed down to No. 6 in the matches he played.

Many believe the experienced batter should have occupied the No. 4 position, particularly given his success in English conditions during Test cricket. Rahul has scored multiple Test centuries in England and is regarded as one of India’s most reliable players against the moving ball.

Instead, India opted to use him lower down the order, limiting his opportunity to anchor the innings when conditions were at their most challenging.

Ishan Kishan’s Promotion Didn’t Deliver

The decision to send Ishan Kishan at No. 4 also came under criticism.

Kishan earned praise for his aggressive batting during the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup, where he produced several match-winning knocks in batting-friendly conditions.

However, England presented an entirely different challenge.

After missing the opening ODI, Kishan was promoted to No. 4 in the remaining two matches but managed scores of just 1 and 14, struggling against disciplined pace bowling.

His difficulties had already been visible during the preceding T20I series, yet the management continued to back him in a key middle-order role.

Shivam Dube’s Selection Questioned

Another major selection debate centred around Shivam Dube.

Following Nitish Kumar Reddy’s injury, Dube was drafted into the squad, but critics believe Yashasvi Jaiswal would have been a more suitable replacement.

Although Jaiswal is primarily an opener, many feel his long-term importance to India’s ODI plans made him the stronger option.

Dube, meanwhile, struggled to make an impact with either bat or ball before eventually losing his place for the series decider.

Young Pacers Fail to Match Expectations

India’s pace attack also failed to live up to expectations.

Left-arm seamer Gurnoor Brar, who impressed on his ODI debut against Afghanistan, found conditions in England far more demanding.

His difficult outing in the final ODI, where he conceded 97 runs without taking a wicket, highlighted the challenges of adapting to international cricket.

Similarly, Prince Yadav was unable to replicate the form that had earned him recognition during the Indian Premier League (IPL), struggling to make a significant impact during both the T20I and ODI series.

Injuries Added to India’s Problems

India’s campaign was further disrupted by injuries.

The absence of key players, particularly premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the final ODI, weakened the bowling attack at a crucial stage of the series.

However, many observers believe that while injuries certainly played a role, tactical errors and questionable team management decisions ultimately proved more damaging.

Lessons Ahead of Bigger Challenges

The tour has provided valuable lessons for the Indian team management.

Success in subcontinental conditions does not always translate overseas, particularly in England where batting requires greater patience and technical discipline.

As India begin preparations for future ICC tournaments and the 2027 ODI World Cup, finding the right batting order and selecting players based on conditions rather than recent form could become one of the team’s biggest priorities.

The England series may have ended in disappointment, but it has also exposed areas that require urgent attention if India hope to remain one of the world’s leading ODI sides.
