The ICC is reportedly considering major reforms, including a 12-team ODI World Cup, WTC semi-finals and a new 'Super Seven' tournament format.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is reportedly evaluating one of the most significant overhauls of international cricket in recent years, with major changes being discussed for both the ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship (WTC).

According to reports emerging from the ICC’s annual meetings, the governing body is exploring a proposal to reduce the number of teams in the 2027 ODI World Cup from 14 to 12, while also considering the introduction of semi-finals in the World Test Championship.

If approved, the changes could reshape the future of international cricket and significantly alter the qualification pathway for emerging nations.

2027 ODI World Cup Could Feature Only 12 Teams

The 2027 ODI World Cup, scheduled to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, is expected to be the first tournament affected if the proposal receives final approval.

A reduction from 14 teams to 12 would make qualification considerably tougher. Under the reported proposal, only two teams would qualify through the global qualifying tournament instead of the previously planned four, making the race for World Cup spots far more competitive.

The revised structure is also expected to introduce a new ‘Super Seven’ stage, replacing parts of the current tournament format in an effort to create more high-quality contests between leading cricket nations.

WTC Semi-Finals Also Under Consideration

Another significant proposal reportedly being discussed is the introduction of semi-finals in the World Test Championship.

The current WTC format sees the top two teams in the standings qualify directly for the final. Under the proposed system, the top four teams could instead advance to semi-finals before the championship match, potentially creating more meaningful Test cricket towards the end of each cycle.

Supporters believe the change could increase competition and maintain interest among multiple teams throughout the championship.

Changes Could Extend to T20 World Cup

The ICC is also examining adjustments to its shortest-format tournament.

Reports suggest the 2028 T20 World Cup, which will feature 20 participating teams, could adopt a new ‘Super 10’ stage during the second round. The revised format aims to provide more competitive fixtures while maintaining opportunities for emerging cricket nations.

No Final Decision Yet

While the proposals have generated significant discussion across the cricketing world, the ICC has not yet announced any official decision.

If implemented, the changes would represent one of the biggest structural transformations in modern international cricket, affecting qualification pathways, tournament formats and the overall competitive landscape.

Cricket fans, players and national boards will now await further updates as the ICC continues deliberations on proposals that could redefine the sport’s biggest global events for years to come.
