New Delhi: India head coach Gautam Gambhir is once again at the centre of a growing debate surrounding the national team, with reports claiming that some senior players have privately raised concerns about his coaching style with officials connected to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The reported development comes at a crucial stage of Gambhir’s tenure. While India have enjoyed considerable success in white-ball cricket under his watch, the team’s struggles in Test cricket have increasingly placed the former India opener under the spotlight.
According to a report carried by News9Live, citing earlier reports, some senior members of the Indian team have conveyed their reservations about Gambhir’s methods to people associated with the BCCI Apex Council and former India cricketers. The concerns reportedly centre around his style of management and the way responsibility is handled following disappointing results.
It is important to note that the reported concerns have not been publicly confirmed by the players or the BCCI. Gambhir continues to remain India’s head coach, and there has been no official announcement suggesting an immediate change in the coaching setup.
Gambhir’s Test record has intensified the scrutiny
The biggest challenge for Gambhir has arguably been India’s performance in the longest format.
India endured a difficult run in Test cricket, including a series defeat against New Zealand, the loss of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, and a 2-0 home series defeat against South Africa.
The South Africa series, in particular, attracted considerable criticism after India were beaten in both Tests on home soil. The results raised questions about the team’s red-ball preparation, selection decisions and overall strategy.
Gambhir’s supporters, however, can point to a very different record in white-ball cricket. During his tenure, India have produced strong results in major limited-overs competitions, demonstrating that his methods have not been without success.
That contrast has become one of the central talking points around his tenure: why has a coaching setup capable of delivering major white-ball success struggled to produce the same consistency in Test cricket?
Sri Lanka Tests could become a defining assignment
The timing of the reported concerns is particularly significant because India are preparing for a two-Test series against Sri Lanka, beginning on August 15.
The first Test will be played in Galle, with the second scheduled for Colombo from August 23. The series is part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle, giving the matches importance beyond the immediate contest.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta has also suggested that questions will be asked of Gambhir as India head into the Sri Lanka Tests, particularly after the team’s recent setbacks against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

Despite the reported reservations, Gambhir is not facing an officially confirmed removal from his position.
His contract runs through the 2027 ODI World Cup, and there is no indication that the BCCI has taken a decision to terminate his tenure. The Indian cricket board is understood to continue backing the coaching setup, even as performances and methods remain under scrutiny.
That distinction is important. Internal concerns, if they exist, do not necessarily mean a coaching change is imminent.
For Gambhir, the immediate answer will have to come on the field.
A different challenge in Sri Lanka
India’s squad for the Sri Lanka Tests has also brought several interesting selection developments. Shubman Gill will lead the side, while Ravindra Jadeja returns to the Test setup. The team has also included domestic performers such as Saransh Jain, highlighting India’s effort to strengthen its options in spin-friendly conditions.
There has also been uncertainty surrounding Jasprit Bumrah, whose availability has been affected by a knee injury. Reuters reported on August 3 that Bumrah had been ruled out of the Sri Lanka Tests after failing a final fitness test, with Auqib Nabi receiving his maiden senior Test call-up.
That could make Gambhir’s tactical decisions even more important.
The bigger question for Gambhir
Gambhir’s tenure has already produced both memorable highs and difficult lows. The team’s success in white-ball cricket has strengthened his case, but Test cricket remains the area where the biggest questions continue to linger.
For a coach known for his strong opinions and uncompromising approach, the next few weeks could prove particularly significant.
If India perform strongly in Sri Lanka, much of the current noise around the coaching setup could quickly fade. But another disappointing Test campaign would inevitably bring Gambhir’s methods, selections and leadership decisions under even greater examination.
For now, the reported concerns remain just that — reported concerns, not an official revolt inside the Indian dressing room.
But with the Sri Lanka series approaching, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Gautam Gambhir has plenty to prove in Test cricket, and the next chapter could begin on August 15 in Galle.
