Wales Withdraws Support for Gianni Infantino’s FIFA Re-Election Bid… First Football Association to Break Ranks

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has officially withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino’s bid to continue as FIFA President for the 2027–2031 term, becoming the first national football association to publicly take such a step.

The decision marks a significant development ahead of FIFA’s next presidential election and could influence the stance of other football federations in the coming months.

FAW Cites Loss of Confidence

In a strongly worded statement, the FAW said it no longer has confidence in Infantino’s leadership following a series of recent controversies.

Among the key concerns highlighted was the now-abandoned proposal to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investment firms. The proposal attracted widespread criticism from football stakeholders around the world before eventually being dropped.

According to the Welsh football body, protecting the interests of football should remain FIFA’s highest priority, and any move perceived to compromise that principle is unacceptable.

Proposal Faced Global Opposition

The investment proposal reportedly triggered strong reactions across international football.

Gianni Infantino, who has served as FIFA President since 2016, is expected to seek another term.
