Paris: A major controversy has rocked the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 after Ivory Coast striker Elye Wahi was reportedly placed under investigation in France over alleged match-fixing and betting irregularities.

According to reports, the 23-year-old footballer was arrested by French authorities on May 29, just days before the start of the World Cup, in connection with suspected corruption-related offences tied to a Ligue 1 match.

The investigation centres around whether Wahi deliberately picked up a yellow card while playing for OGC Nice against FC Metz on May 17, triggering suspicious betting activity.

What Is the Allegation?

French investigators are examining unusual betting patterns linked to Wahi being booked in the 35th minute of the match after a late challenge on Metz defender Sadibou Sane.

The yellow card was significant because it led to Wahi’s suspension for the crucial playoff clash against Saint-Étienne due to the accumulation of bookings.

Authorities reportedly became suspicious after the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) received alerts about irregular betting markets focused specifically on Wahi receiving a card in the game.

This triggered an official investigation involving anti-corruption police.

Arrested, Questioned, Then Released

French prosecutors have confirmed that a 23-year-old Ligue 1 player was detained and questioned as part of a broader probe into allegations of:

  • Organised fraud
  • Sports corruption
  • Money laundering
  • Handling criminal proceeds

However, Wahi was later released after questioning and has not been formally charged so far.

Officials have clarified that the investigation remains ongoing and no final conclusions have been reached.

Still Playing at the World Cup

Despite the legal cloud hanging over him, Wahi has continued his international duties with Ivory Coast at the FIFA World Cup in the United States.

The striker started in Ivory Coast’s 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Philadelphia, where he played 55 minutes and nearly scored after striking the crossbar in the second half.

Ivory Coast are now preparing for their next Group E fixture against Germany in Toronto, a crucial clash that could determine their progression in the tournament.

A Rising Career Under Scrutiny

Wahi switched his international allegiance from France’s youth setup to the Ivory Coast senior team earlier this year, a move that was seen as a major boost for the African side.

The talented forward has had a fast-rising club career, representing teams such as:

  • Montpellier
  • Lens
  • Marseille
  • Eintracht Frankfurt
  • OGC Nice (loan)

During his spell with Nice, he scored five goals in 14 Ligue 1 appearances, helping the club maintain its top-flight status.

Ironically, just before his arrest, Wahi had delivered one of his best performances of the season, scoring twice and earning Man of the Match in the playoff against Saint-Étienne.

Big Questions Ahead

The case has now cast a shadow over both Wahi’s future and Ivory Coast’s World Cup campaign.

While the player remains innocent unless proven guilty, the investigation has raised serious concerns about betting integrity in European football.

For now, Wahi remains available for selection, but with authorities continuing their probe, the controversy is likely to remain one of the biggest off-field talking points of the FIFA World Cup.

As the tournament intensifies, all eyes will now be on whether this legal storm impacts the young striker’s performances on the global stage.
