BMW X1 LWB Launched at ₹49.90 Lakh… i5 LWB Bookings Open

New Delhi: German luxury automaker BMW has strengthened its India portfolio with the launch of the new BMW X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB). Priced at an introductory ₹49.90 lakh, the stretched luxury SUV brings significantly more space for rear-seat passengers while surprisingly costing less than its standard petrol sibling.

The new X1 LWB is locally manufactured at the BMW Group Plant Chennai, highlighting the company’s growing focus on local production for the Indian luxury-car market.

BMW X1 LWB Gets a Major Stretch

The biggest talking point is right there in its name the longer wheelbase.

The new BMW X1 LWB measures 4,616 mm in length, while its wheelbase has been stretched by 108 mm to 2,800 mm. BMW says this translates into around 150 mm of additional rear legroom, making the SUV considerably more comfortable for passengers who spend most of their time in the back seat.

Rear passengers also get extended seat cushioning and backrests that can recline by up to 28.5 degrees, giving the compact luxury SUV a more chauffeur-friendly character.

Commenting on the launch, Hardeep Singh Brar, President and CEO of BMW Group India, highlighted the changing expectations of premium customers in the country, with greater emphasis being placed on space, comfort and luxury.

Big Panoramic Sunroof, Curved Display and Harman Kardon Audio

BMW has also packed the cabin with several premium features. One of the highlights is a massive nine-square-foot panoramic sunroof, claimed to be among the largest in its segment.

The cabin further features a BMW Curved Display, ambient lighting and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, strengthening the X1 LWB’s premium appeal.

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre TwinPower Turbo petrol engine paired with a seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission. The engine develops 156 hp, while BMW claims fuel efficiency of 15.5 km/l.

BMW i5 LWB Bookings Open… 669 Km Range Is the Big Number

BMW’s second major announcement is aimed squarely at India’s growing premium EV market.

The company has opened bookings for the first-ever BMW i5 Long Wheelbase, which will become BMW’s first locally produced electric executive sedan in India.

And the numbers are impressive.

The BMW i5 LWB measures a substantial 5,175 mm in length and gets a massive 3,105 mm wheelbase, promising generous rear-seat space and an executive-focused experience.

Power comes from an 81.6 kWh battery pack, with BMW claiming a driving range of up to 669 km on a single charge.

Its electric motor develops 268 hp, allowing the luxury EV to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds.

BMW has also equipped the i5 LWB with adaptive rear-axle air suspension, designed to improve ride comfort, particularly during long-distance journeys.

BMW Makes a Bigger Bet on Rear-Seat Luxury

With the X1 LWB and upcoming i5 LWB, BMW appears to be adapting its global luxury products more closely to Indian preferences.

The strategy is clear: offer the premium driving experience associated with BMW, but add the rear-seat space and comfort increasingly demanded by luxury-car buyers in India.

At ₹49.90 lakh, the X1 LWB could prove particularly interesting for buyers seeking extra cabin space without stepping into a substantially more expensive luxury SUV. Meanwhile, the i5 LWB’s claimed 669 km range and locally produced status could make it an important new contender in India’s premium electric-car segment.
