Bengaluru: A series of unfortunate accidents in Bengaluru has once again highlighted serious concerns over workplace safety and public infrastructure maintenance. On Friday, a contract labourer working on the Namma Metro pillar lighting project died after being electrocuted near Trinity Metro Station, while a separate incident involving a falling tree branch left a motorcyclist critically injured.

According to officials from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the fatal accident occurred around 3:52 PM during excavation work near Pillar No. 153, located outside Trinity Metro Station.

The deceased was employed by M R Electricals, the contractor responsible for executing lighting works for metro pillars. Officials said the worker came into contact with a live electric source while digging an earth pit, resulting in a severe electric shock.

He was immediately rushed to St. Philomena’s Hospital for emergency treatment. However, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

In an official statement, BMRCL described the incident as an “unfortunate accident” and said that the exact cause of the electrocution is yet to be determined. Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to establish how the worker came in contact with the live electrical source.

The metro corporation also expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured that further information would be shared once the inquiry is completed.

Tree Branch Falls on Moving Biker

In another alarming incident reported from the city, a 52-year-old man, identified as Satish, sustained serious head injuries after a dry tree branch suddenly fell on him while he was riding his motorcycle near Ram Mandir Road in Rajajinagar.

The accident took place on Wednesday evening when Satish was reportedly travelling to collect a finance payment.

A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, captured the shocking moment when the large branch snapped from a roadside tree and struck the rider directly on the head. Satish, who was not wearing a helmet, immediately lost control of his motorcycle and crashed onto the road.

Local residents rushed to his rescue after finding him unconscious. He was shifted to a nearby hospital, where he continues to receive treatment for severe head injuries, police said.

Fresh Questions Over Safety Measures

The two unrelated incidents have sparked renewed discussions over worker safety protocols at infrastructure projects and the need for better maintenance of ageing roadside trees across Bengaluru.

While the metro electrocution is under official investigation, civic authorities may also face questions regarding the condition of dry trees that pose risks to commuters, particularly during windy or rainy weather.

As investigations continue, both incidents serve as stark reminders of the importance of strict safety standards at construction sites and proactive maintenance of public spaces to prevent avoidable tragedies.
