Ambala Borewell Tragedy, 4-Year-Old Nirvair Singh Dies After 21-Hour Rescue That Gripped the Nation

In a heartbreaking incident from Haryana, a four-year-old boy, Nirvair Singh, who fell into a 220-foot-deep borewell in Ambala district, died after a prolonged 21-hour rescue operation that had kept authorities and locals on edge.

The child was finally pulled out at around 3:45 am on Wednesday by joint teams of the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). He was immediately rushed to the Sub-Divisional Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment, where doctors declared him dead.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Dhaneora village when Nirvair had accompanied his father, Manjit, to the fields to deliver breakfast to his grandfather, Karnail Singh. While the family members were occupied with work, the child accidentally slipped into an open and abandoned borewell.

Initial attempts by locals to rescue him failed, after which authorities were informed around 7 am. What followed was an intense and complex rescue operation supervised by Deputy Commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar.

Rescue teams deployed specialised equipment, including hooks and cameras, to locate and retrieve the child from the narrow nine-inch-wide borewell. Multiple attempts were made to pull him out safely, but the operation faced repeated challenges.

Authorities had also planned to dig a parallel shaft to reach the child, a method often used in such emergencies. However, the presence of underground water tables posed a serious obstacle, as it threatened to flood the newly dug pit and further complicate the rescue.

Despite continuous efforts through the day and night, the operation ended in tragedy.

The incident has left the local community in deep shock, especially as the child was supposed to begin a new chapter in his life. Nirvair was set to attend kindergarten for the first time on Wednesday. According to family members, he had insisted on visiting the fields before starting school — a decision that turned fatal.

The tragedy once again highlights the dangers posed by abandoned and uncovered borewells, a recurring issue in rural India despite repeated warnings and regulations.
