India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate defends the decision to replace Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain, calling it a crucial step in India's long-term roadmap for the 2028 T20 World Cup.

India’s recent T20I struggles on the United Kingdom tour have sparked intense debate among cricket fans, with many questioning the decision to remove Suryakumar Yadav as captain. However, India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has defended the move, insisting that the management is focused on building a team capable of succeeding at the 2028 ICC T20 World Cup in Australia.

Speaking after India’s latest defeat in England, the former Netherlands all-rounder acknowledged the criticism but maintained that difficult decisions are often necessary when planning for the future.

“Surya was a fantastic leader, but if you’re looking two years ahead to Australia, you have to make some really tough calls,” ten Doeschate said during the post-match press conference.

Long-Term Vision Over Short-Term Results

The Indian team has endured a difficult run since lifting the T20 World Cup 2026 trophy. Consecutive defeats against Ireland, followed by a disappointing series in England, have raised concerns over the team’s direction under its new leadership.

Despite the poor results, ten Doeschate stressed that the coaching staff remains committed to its long-term strategy rather than reacting to immediate setbacks.

He admitted that the team’s record under the new captain—losing five of the last six matches—does not present an ideal picture. However, he urged supporters to judge the transition with patience instead of focusing solely on recent outcomes.

Squad Changes Part of India’s Rebuilding Process

According to the assistant coach, India’s selectors and coaching staff have introduced several changes to the squad as part of a broader rebuilding process ahead of future ICC tournaments.

He acknowledged that replacing an established captain like Suryakumar Yadav naturally attracts widespread debate, especially when results do not go in the team’s favour.

“There will always be millions of opinions,” he noted, adding that such reactions are expected whenever major leadership decisions are taken in Indian cricket.

Pressure Mounts Ahead of Upcoming Series

India now faces increasing pressure to bounce back in the remaining matches and restore confidence before the next international assignments. While criticism continues to grow, the management appears determined to stay committed to its roadmap, believing that short-term pain could lead to long-term success.

Whether the gamble pays off will depend on how quickly the new-look Indian side adapts and begins delivering consistent performances on the field.
