Bengaluru’s Second Airport Plan Gets a New Twist… Fourth Location Added as CM Shivakumar Reveals Key Criteria
Harohalli joins Nelamangala, Somanahalli and Chudahalli as Karnataka evaluates possible sites for Bengaluru’s second airport, with technical feasibility and land costs set to decide the final location.
The race for Bengaluru’s second airport has taken a fresh turn after another location entered the list of possible sites being considered by the Karnataka government.
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has directed officials to examine Harohalli as an additional option for the proposed airport project, making it the fourth location under consideration.
The other shortlisted locations include Nelamangala, Somanahalli, and Chudahalli.
However, the state government has decided not to rush into a final decision. Officials will wait for detailed technical and financial assessments before submitting the proposal to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Harohalli Joins Bengaluru’s Airport Site Race
The addition of Harohalli has increased the number of potential sites being evaluated for one of Karnataka’s biggest infrastructure projects.

According to officials, the final location will be selected after considering multiple factors, including:
- Technical feasibility
- Land acquisition cost
- Social impact
- Connectivity
- Impact on local communities
The proposed airport is expected to require approximately 3,500 acres of land, making land availability and acquisition expenses among the biggest challenges for the project.
Government Wants Lower Costs and Minimum Displacement
Chief Minister Shivakumar has instructed officials to focus on a location where land acquisition does not create excessive financial pressure on the state government.
He said the selected site should not only be affordable but also technically suitable, with fewer geographical challenges.
The government is particularly looking to avoid large-scale displacement of villages due to the airport project.
Shivakumar said that while compensation can be provided for scattered houses, relocating entire villages should be avoided wherever possible.
He indicated that the airport is likely to come up in South Bengaluru, provided the location meets all technical and economic requirements.
Singapore Consultancy and KPMG Conduct Studies
To ensure a detailed evaluation, Karnataka has appointed an international consultancy based in Singapore to conduct the technical feasibility assessment.
Meanwhile, KPMG has been assigned the responsibility of carrying out the financial analysis of the project.
The reports from these studies will play a crucial role in determining which site moves forward.
AAI Already Inspected Potential Locations
The Airports Authority of India has already conducted inspections of multiple shortlisted areas.
Officials have reviewed:
- Two locations along Kanakapura Road near Harohalli in South Bengaluru
- One location along the Nelamangala-Kunigal Road corridor
Government sources suggest that the Kanakapura Road options are currently considered strong contenders due to potentially lower land acquisition difficulties and better overall feasibility.
Why Bengaluru Needs a Second Airport
The proposal for Bengaluru’s second airport was announced during the Karnataka Budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in March.
The move comes as Bengaluru’s existing aviation infrastructure continues to face increasing pressure due to rising passenger numbers and expanding economic activity.
The city’s current airport, Kempegowda International Airport, has witnessed rapid growth since opening and has become one of India’s busiest aviation hubs.
A second airport is expected to improve connectivity, support future passenger growth and strengthen Bengaluru’s position as a major global business and technology centre.
Final Decision Depends on Detailed Reports
Although several locations are now under consideration, the Karnataka government has made it clear that the final decision will depend on expert recommendations rather than political preference.
With land costs, environmental impact and technical suitability being major factors, the upcoming feasibility reports will determine which location eventually becomes Bengaluru’s second gateway to the world.
