‘Peddi’ Gets a Second Chance After Backlash: New Janhvi Kapoor Scenes to Be Added, Director Says ‘Audience Will Connect More…’
Following criticism over the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, the makers of Ram Charan’s blockbuster sports drama have announced an extended theatrical version with fresh scenes aimed at deepening her role.
Hyderabad: In an unusual move rarely seen in Indian cinema, the makers of Ram Charan’s blockbuster sports drama ‘Peddi’ have decided to release an extended version of the film after facing widespread criticism over the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character.
The updated version, set to hit theatres on June 17, comes after weeks of debate surrounding the treatment of Janhvi’s role, Achiyyamma, and accusations that the character was reduced to visual appeal rather than meaningful storytelling.
Now, director Buchi Babu Sana says the audience will finally get to see a more complete version of the character.
What Will Change in the Extended Version?
Speaking at a recent success celebration event, Buchi Babu confirmed that the revised edition will feature three additional scenes, including two key sequences involving Janhvi Kapoor’s character and another featuring veteran actor Jagapathi Babu.
According to the filmmaker, the new scenes were always intended to strengthen Achiyyamma’s emotional arc and provide greater depth to her journey.
“We believe audiences will connect even more strongly with the character after watching these scenes,” the director said while discussing the decision to re-edit the film.
The revised cut has already been completed and will be screened in theatres from June 17.
The Controversy That Refused to Die
Despite opening to strong box office numbers, ‘Peddi’ soon found itself at the centre of a social media storm.
A section of viewers accused the film of objectifying Janhvi Kapoor’s character, arguing that several scenes relied heavily on camera angles focused on her appearance rather than her role in the story.
Particular criticism was directed at sequences that repeatedly highlighted the actress through close-up shots and visual framing that many viewers considered unnecessary.
Another scene involving Ram Charan’s character and Achiyyamma sparked intense debate online, with critics questioning whether the film romanticised behaviour that lacked consent.
As discussions intensified, hashtags related to the controversy began trending across social media platforms, turning the issue into one of the most talked-about topics in the Telugu film industry.
Director Buchi Babu Issues Public Apology
Facing mounting criticism, Buchi Babu Sana publicly addressed the controversy and acknowledged audience concerns.
The director stated that his intention was never to disrespect women or present female characters in a manner that could make viewers uncomfortable.
He explained that certain storytelling choices were designed to reflect the protagonist’s upbringing and personal growth throughout the narrative. However, he admitted that some portions may not have translated effectively on screen.
The filmmaker also assured audiences that feedback was taken seriously and promised corrective measures.

The decision to release an extended version appears to be part of that effort.
A Big-Budget Epic With Strong Ambitions
Released on June 4, ‘Peddi’ is set in 1980s Andhra Pradesh and tells the story of a man fighting systemic oppression in a remote tribal community.
The narrative follows his struggle to secure basic rights, political recognition and infrastructure development for his people, using sports as a vehicle for social change.
The film features an impressive ensemble cast including Ram Charan, Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar, Jagapathi Babu, Divyenndu, and Boman Irani.
Adding to its scale is a soundtrack composed by legendary music maestro A. R. Rahman.
Produced on an estimated budget of ₹350 crore, the film remains one of the most ambitious Telugu projects in recent years.
Can the Extended Version Change Public Perception?

The decision to alter a film after its theatrical release is uncommon, making the upcoming version of ‘Peddi’ a closely watched experiment.
For some viewers, the additional scenes may help address concerns about character development and representation. For others, the move signals a growing willingness among filmmakers to respond to audience feedback in real time.
Either way, June 17 could mark an important second chapter for a film that has generated as much conversation off-screen as it has on-screen.
Whether the new version succeeds in changing perceptions remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: ‘Peddi’ is getting another opportunity to tell its story.
