Mercedes-Benz India launched the new 2026 S-Class plug-in hybrid luxury sedan while expressing strong confidence in sustained growth for the Indian market.

Luxury car giant Mercedes-Benz India is showing strong confidence in the Indian automobile market for 2026, even as global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions continue to impact industries worldwide. The German automaker believes rising customer demand, premiumisation trends, and expanding interest in electrified vehicles will help sustain growth in the country.

The company recently launched the updated 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class facelift in India at a starting price of ₹2.20 crore (ex-showroom). The flagship luxury sedan marks a significant milestone for the brand as it becomes Mercedes-Benz India’s first-ever plug-in hybrid model.

One of the biggest highlights of the new S-Class is its ability to travel up to 115 kilometres in pure electric mode, thanks to its advanced onboard battery system. Bookings for the luxury sedan are already underway, while customer deliveries are expected to begin around the festive Diwali season this year.

Speaking about the company’s outlook, Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, expressed optimism about the market despite several external challenges.

According to Iyer, the company had entered 2026 expecting growth and continues to maintain that outlook. He stated that demand for luxury vehicles in India remains strong even amid macroeconomic pressures, fluctuating foreign exchange rates, and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.

Mercedes-Benz India has already seen encouraging momentum in the first quarter of calendar year 2026. The company registered a 7 percent year-on-year growth, selling 5,131 units between January and March, compared to 4,775 units during the same period last year.

Interestingly, while the company recorded a slight decline in overall calendar year sales during 2025, it simultaneously achieved its highest-ever fiscal sales performance, reflecting the growing appetite for premium automobiles among Indian buyers.

Iyer also highlighted how customer preferences are rapidly shifting toward high-end luxury products. He noted that the company’s Top-End Vehicle (TEV) segment, which includes cars priced above ₹1.5 crore, now contributes nearly 27-28 percent of total sales volume in India.

This growing demand for ultra-premium vehicles has significantly increased Mercedes-Benz’s average selling price in the market. According to the company, Indian luxury buyers are increasingly choosing more feature-rich, technologically advanced, and performance-oriented models.

Apart from conventional petrol and diesel vehicles, Mercedes-Benz India is aggressively expanding its electrified portfolio. The company revealed that electric vehicle penetration within its top-end segment has already reached nearly 20 percent, while overall EV penetration is approaching double digits.

The newly launched S-Class plug-in hybrid further strengthens Mercedes-Benz’s multi-powertrain strategy for India. Instead of focusing solely on fully electric vehicles, the brand is now offering customers a broader range of options, including hybrids, clean diesels, petrol engines, and EVs.

Another major success story for the company has been the new Mercedes-Benz CLA, which has reportedly witnessed exceptionally strong demand in India. In fact, the plug-in hybrid version of the CLA is already sold out until October-November 2026, underlining growing customer interest in electrified luxury mobility.

Mercedes-Benz India also confirmed that several more product launches are lined up for the remainder of the year. Out of the 12 launches announced earlier, nearly 8 to 9 vehicles have already been introduced, with the remaining launches expected to include a mix of internal combustion and electric vehicles.

However, the luxury carmaker hinted that another price hike may soon be introduced. The company has already implemented two price increases this year, largely due to pressure from currency fluctuations, rising operational costs, and global supply-chain disruptions.

Despite these challenges, Iyer said the company has managed supply chains efficiently and maintained sufficient inventory buffers to meet customer demand across India.

The launch of the new S-Class and the company’s aggressive product strategy indicate that Mercedes-Benz is not merely defending its position in India’s luxury market — it is actively preparing for long-term expansion.

As India’s appetite for premium cars continues to rise, Mercedes-Benz appears determined to strengthen its leadership by combining luxury, electrification, and technological innovation under one umbrella.
