Tesla Model Y Ownership Plan: Bring Home a Tesla with ₹6 Lakh Down Payment
Tesla’s new ownership programme allows Indian buyers to take home a Model Y with a ₹6 lakh down payment and monthly payments starting at around ₹39,990.

Owning a Tesla in India may no longer be a distant dream for many car buyers. In a move designed to make premium electric mobility more accessible, the American EV giant has introduced a new ‘Ease of Ownership’ programme that allows customers to bring home the Tesla Model Y with a down payment of just ₹6 lakh.

The company says monthly payments under the programme start at approximately ₹39,990, making the globally popular electric SUV more attainable for Indian consumers considering a switch from traditional petrol-powered vehicles.

The announcement comes as Tesla continues to strengthen its presence in the country, recently expanding its retail network with a new Experience Centre in Hyderabad.

A New Approach to EV Ownership

According to Sharad Agarwal, Head of Tesla India, the initiative is aimed at reducing the financial barriers often associated with premium electric vehicles.

Under the programme, customers can begin their Tesla ownership journey with a relatively modest upfront investment while spreading the remaining cost through monthly payments.

Tesla believes the real value lies not only in the financing structure but also in the long-term savings associated with electric mobility.

Lower Running Costs Could Offset Monthly Payments

One of Tesla’s key arguments is that EV ownership can significantly reduce monthly operating expenses.

The company estimates that many petrol vehicle owners spend between ₹15,000 and ₹20,000 per month on fuel and maintenance alone. With fuel prices continuing to rise, Tesla sees electric mobility as an increasingly cost-effective alternative.

By eliminating regular fuel expenses and reducing maintenance requirements, Tesla argues that a substantial portion of the monthly vehicle payment can effectively be offset through savings.

For many consumers, this changes the ownership equation from simply evaluating the purchase price to considering the overall cost of driving.

Technology at the Centre of Ownership Experience

Tesla is also relying heavily on its technology ecosystem to differentiate itself from conventional automakers.

Unlike traditional vehicles that require periodic servicing every few months or after a fixed number of kilometres, Tesla says its cars do not follow a prescribed maintenance schedule.

Instead, the company uses advanced software systems and remote diagnostics to monitor vehicle health and resolve many issues without requiring customers to visit a service centre.

This digital-first approach is a cornerstone of Tesla’s global ownership experience and is now being introduced to Indian buyers.

Remote Diagnostics and Mobile Support

Tesla claims that many technical issues can be identified and fixed remotely through software updates and diagnostic tools.

For situations where physical intervention is necessary, the company offers 24×7 mobile service support, allowing technicians to assist customers without requiring them to travel long distances.

The strategy is particularly significant in a market as large and diverse as India, where physical service infrastructure is still expanding.

Tesla says this model enables customers across the country to purchase and use its vehicles even if they do not currently live near a dedicated Tesla service centre or showroom.

Expanding Tesla’s Presence in India

The launch of the ownership programme reflects Tesla’s broader ambition to establish a stronger foothold in the Indian automotive market.

With the Model Y already positioned as one of the brand’s flagship offerings in the country, the company is now focusing on making ownership simpler, more convenient, and financially attractive.

As India’s EV ecosystem continues to mature, initiatives like the ‘Ease of Ownership’ programme could play a crucial role in encouraging more consumers to consider electric vehicles as a practical alternative to conventional cars.

For buyers who have long admired Tesla from afar, the company’s latest move may bring the dream of driving one significantly closer to reality.
