Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to replace Tilak Varma or Shivam Dube? Mohammad Kaif makes bold ‘six months’ prediction
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could become impossible to leave out of India’s first-choice T20I XI, potentially putting vice-captain Tilak Varma or Shivam Dube under pressure.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise has created an intriguing selection question for Team India, and former cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes it could become impossible for the selectors to ignore within the next six months.
Kaif has predicted that the teenager will eventually force his way into India’s first-choice T20I playing XI, with either Tilak Varma or Shivam Dube potentially having to make way.
The former India batter made the prediction on his YouTube channel, despite Tilak currently serving as India’s T20I vice-captain.
“I understand that Tilak is the vice-captain. But vice-captains have also been dropped before,” Kaif said.
He also questioned Dube’s role, arguing that the left-hander still needs to prove himself consistently and that his limited bowling contribution means he is effectively being used primarily as a batter.
Kaif then put a timeline on his prediction: “After six months, either Tilak or Dube will be out. You will have to remove one, and Sooryavanshi will play.”
Why Kaif believes Sooryavanshi will be difficult to ignore
The argument is built around more than just Sooryavanshi’s explosive batting.
Kaif pointed towards the youngster’s performances in the Duleep Trophy, where he also showed signs of developing his bowling. The former India player believes even a few useful overs could significantly strengthen Sooryavanshi’s case for selection.
“Sooryavanshi scored in the Duleep Trophy as well. He has improved his game. He was even bowling there,” Kaif said.
Sooryavanshi’s numbers provide plenty of fuel for the debate.
Across his first six T20Is in 2026, the teenager scored 193 runs at an average of 32.17 and a strike rate of 189.22. His boundary-hitting has been particularly striking, with a four or six arriving once every 3.4 deliveries and a maximum every 7.2 balls.
His IPL campaign made an even stronger impression. Sooryavanshi accumulated 776 runs at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.51, smashing 72 sixes along the way.
Those numbers have changed the nature of the conversation. The question is increasingly becoming not whether Sooryavanshi belongs at international level, but how India can accommodate him when established players already occupy the batting positions he could target.
Is Tilak Varma really under pressure?
Kaif’s prediction is eye-catching, but Tilak Varma’s own numbers suggest the situation is far from straightforward.
Tilak has accumulated 395 T20I runs in 2026, averaging 35.91 while striking at 154.90. Those figures hardly resemble those of a batter struggling to justify his place.
There is also a difference in what the two left-handers potentially offer.
Sooryavanshi’s game is built around extraordinary tempo and sustained boundary-hitting, while Tilak provides greater flexibility in constructing an innings and adapting to different match situations.
India’s eventual decision, therefore, may depend as much on the batting philosophy they want to pursue as on raw individual numbers.

Shivam Dube presents another selection puzzle
Shivam Dube is the other player named by Kaif, although his batting returns also complicate the argument.
Dube has scored 415 T20I runs in 2026 at an average of 31.92 and a strike rate of 170.78. He was also productive during India’s T20 World Cup campaign, scoring 235 runs at a strike rate of 169.06.
The bigger question concerns his secondary skill.
Dube has bowled just 26 overs across 23 T20Is in 2026, taking 12 wickets while conceding 12.44 runs per over. Those numbers underline why he has largely been utilised as a power-hitter capable of providing occasional overs rather than as a frontline bowling all-rounder.
That could become significant if Sooryavanshi develops his own bowling into a dependable option.
His bowling remains a work in progress, however. A recent 2/11 from three overs in the Duleep Trophy offered an encouraging glimpse, but it remains too small a sample to establish him as a genuine all-round option.
Gambhir has already explained why Sooryavanshi must wait
Despite the teenager’s numbers, India head coach Gautam Gambhir recently backed the established opening combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, explaining why Sooryavanshi had not immediately walked into the playing XI.
Gambhir stressed the importance of showing faith in players who had already delivered for India and said Sooryavanshi would receive his opportunity and a proper run when the time arrived.
That leaves India with the kind of selection problem most teams would happily accept.
Sooryavanshi’s extraordinary scoring rate is demanding attention, but Tilak and Dube are producing significant numbers of their own. Kaif believes that equation will become unsustainable within six months.
Whether his prediction proves correct remains to be seen, but one thing is already evident: Sooryavanshi is making the competition for places in India’s T20I batting order increasingly intense.
