Legendary singer Usha Mangeshkar has opened up about a deeply personal memory involving her elder sister, iconic playback singer Asha Bhosle, recalling the first time they met after Asha had eloped and married at a young age.

In a heartfelt conversation, Usha revisited the emotional reunion that came years after Asha left home to marry Ganpatrao Bhosle, a decision that had created significant tension within the Mangeshkar family. At the time of her marriage, Asha was just 16, while Ganpatrao was nearly two decades older.

For Usha, the meeting was not just about reconnecting with a sister it was also a moment of shock. Speaking about that first encounter, she revealed that Asha had already become a mother to her son Hemant by then.

Recalling her childhood memories, Usha described Asha as a fearless and mischievous young girl. “She was a tomboy,” Usha remembered, saying Asha would often wear pants, shirts and waistcoats, ride bicycles and get into playful fights.

But the sister she saw years later was almost unrecognisable.

Instead of the carefree child she remembered, Usha found Asha dressed in a simple white sari, adorned with a large tikka, gold bangles and a wristwatch a picture of maturity and responsibility. The transformation left her stunned.

One small moment from that reunion has stayed with Usha for decades. She recalled how Asha immediately noticed her messy hair and scolded her for not pinning it properly, even handing her a hairpin and asking her to fix it. For Usha, it was a simple but telling sign of how much her sister had changed.

She also noted that Asha’s way of speaking had changed entirely after marriage, something that struck her deeply during their conversation.

The emotional distance within the family, however, slowly began to fade after the birth of Hemant, the first grandson of the family. Usha shared that their mother was overjoyed, and this eventually became the bridge that brought Asha back into the family fold.

The strained relationship was not limited to Usha alone. Asha’s elder sister, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, had also reportedly disapproved of the marriage and did not speak to Asha for a long period.

Asha Bhosle’s personal life saw several ups and downs. Her marriage with Ganpatrao ended in separation in 1960. Years later, she found love again and married celebrated composer R. D. Burman in 1980. Their partnership lasted until his death in 1994.

Today, Asha Bhosle remains one of the most celebrated voices in Indian music history. But Usha’s recollection offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the woman behind the legend a story of family, distance, heartbreak, and eventual healing.
