Big Boost for India US Trade Deal? Top US Trade Official to Visit New Delhi Next Week After Modi Trump Talks
With negotiations accelerating, Washington and New Delhi are inching closer to an interim trade agreement that could reshape bilateral economic ties.
New Delhi: Trade negotiations between India and the United States appear to be gathering serious momentum, with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer set to visit India next week for high-level discussions aimed at finalising an interim bilateral trade agreement.
The development comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump reviewed the progress of trade talks during their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders expressed satisfaction with the pace of negotiations and instructed officials from both sides to speed up efforts towards a balanced, commercially meaningful, and mutually beneficial trade agreement.
Jamieson Greer’s India Visit Confirmed
The MEA confirmed that Jamieson Greer will travel to India next week to continue the discussions.
The visit, scheduled between June 22 and June 24, is expected to focus on finalising the framework for the interim trade deal while also advancing talks on the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) currently under negotiation.
India’s Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said Greer will engage directly with the Commerce and Industry Ministry to push the talks forward.
Officials believe the meetings could play a crucial role in clearing the remaining hurdles.
Trump Says Trade Deal Is ‘Very Close’
US President Donald Trump also sounded optimistic about the progress after his meeting with Prime Minister Modi.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said the two countries were “very close” to concluding the agreement.
He highlighted the growing economic relationship between India and the United States and praised Modi’s role in encouraging Indian investments into the American economy.
Trump noted that several developments were taking place simultaneously between the two countries, ranging from trade to strategic cooperation.

What Will the Trade Deal Cover?
According to Indian officials, the proposed agreement is expected to address a wide range of trade-related issues, covering multiple sectors and long-standing concerns.
One of the major issues on the table includes the US’s proposed tariff measures under Section 301 proceedings, which have been a sensitive topic in recent months.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal indicated that once the agreement is finalised, many of these concerns could receive clearer solutions within the larger trade framework.
The broader goal remains to create a stronger and more predictable trade environment for businesses on both sides.
A Bigger Strategic Partnership Beyond Trade

Trade was not the only topic discussed during the Modi-Trump meeting.
Both leaders also reviewed progress under the India-US COMPACT Initiative, launched following their Washington meeting earlier this year.
The initiative covers multiple strategic sectors including:
- Defence cooperation
- Strategic technologies
- Energy partnership
- Supply chain resilience
- Investment flows
- Trade expansion
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, signaling that the relationship is growing far beyond commerce alone.
Why This Deal Matters
The India-US trade deal is seen as a major economic milestone for both nations.
For India, it could improve market access, attract greater foreign investment, and ease tariff-related uncertainties.
For the US, it offers stronger access to one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies and deeper strategic alignment in the Indo-Pacific region.
With geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and changing global trade patterns, both countries appear eager to secure stronger economic ties.
The upcoming visit by Jamieson Greer could prove to be a decisive moment in determining whether the long-discussed agreement finally moves closer to completion.
As expectations rise, businesses and policymakers on both sides will be watching New Delhi closely next week.
