‘He Almost Slapped Me’: Twinkle Khanna’s shocking throwback about Aamir Khan on Mela sets goes viral again

An old and amusing exchange between Bollywood stars Twinkle Khanna and Aamir Khan has resurfaced online, reminding fans of their unique off-screen chemistry and the chaotic memories from the set of Mela.

The incident, first shared by Twinkle during the 2015 launch of her book Mrs Funnybones, has once again become a talking point among Bollywood fans.

During the event, filmmaker Karan Johar asked Aamir about his experience working with Twinkle in Mela. Before Aamir could respond, Twinkle jumped in and narrated a hilarious behind-the-scenes moment.

Recalling an outdoor shoot, Twinkle revealed that Aamir had once confronted her for not paying attention on set. According to her, Aamir noticed she seemed distracted and asked what was going on.

Her answer?

“I am thinking about Akshay Kumar.”

That unexpected response, Twinkle joked, left Aamir so stunned that he “almost slapped” her.

The audience burst into laughter as Aamir, visibly surprised, questioned the memory and asked, “Did I?” He quickly denied reacting that strongly, saying he wouldn’t have behaved that way. Twinkle, however, insisted that while he may not have physically reacted, his facial expression said it all.

The light-hearted revelation was just one of several stories shared from the making of Mela, the only film collaboration between Aamir and Twinkle.

Another memorable anecdote from the same film involved Aamir getting emotional after director Dharmesh Darshan rejected one of his suggestions for a scene. Twinkle recalled spotting the superstar sitting behind a large rock and crying — a story that left Aamir visibly awkward at the event.

Despite the teasing, Aamir had only warm words for Twinkle. He praised her intelligence, humour, and sharp wit, saying that beneath her glamorous exterior was someone incredibly thoughtful and clever.

He also jokingly remarked that Twinkle had a special talent for “insulting people,” drawing laughter from the crowd.

Twinkle Khanna, who made her Bollywood debut with Barsaat, starred in several popular films including Jaan, Baadshah, and International Khiladi before stepping away from acting.

Today, she has built a successful second career as an author, columnist, and entrepreneur, while continuing to make headlines with her sharp humour and candid storytelling.

As for this resurfaced Mela story, it’s another reminder that sometimes Bollywood’s funniest moments happen far away from the camera.
