A sharp diplomatic spat has broken out between the United States and Italy after Donald Trump claimed that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had “begged” him for a photograph during the recent G7 Summit—a statement that Rome has strongly rejected as “completely made up.”

Trump’s Claim Sparks Controversy

The controversy began after Trump, speaking to Italian TV channel La7, described his interaction with Meloni at the summit in France in strikingly dismissive terms.

“She wanted a picture with me so badly… I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her,” Trump was quoted as saying.

He further added, “She’s probably happy I talked to her. I didn’t have to talk to her.”

The remarks quickly went viral, drawing criticism and disbelief across political circles in Europe.

Meloni’s Sharp Rebuttal

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wasted no time in responding, firmly rejecting Trump’s version of events.

“Donald Trump’s statements are completely made up. I am frankly astonished,” she said, expressing shock at the comments.

In a pointed remark, she added:
“There is one thing he should remember: neither I nor Italy ever beg.”

Meloni also questioned Trump’s approach to allies, stating that it was disappointing he did not show the same toughness toward adversaries of the West.

Diplomatic Fallout Escalates

The dispute soon escalated beyond a verbal exchange. Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of his planned visit to the United States, calling Trump’s remarks “grave and offensive.”
