“I Can Smash the First Ball, But…”: India’s T20I Vice-Captain Tilak Varma Fires Back at Strike-Rate Critics Ahead of Zimbabwe Series
With questions surrounding his recent strike rate, India’s T20I vice-captain Tilak Varma says his batting approach is driven by the team’s needs, not personal statistics, as India gears up for the Zimbabwe T20I series.
The debate around Tilak Varma’s strike rate has grown louder in recent months, but the India batter believes there is more to T20 cricket than just scoring at a rapid pace.
Ahead of India’s three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, the newly appointed vice-captain addressed criticism surrounding his batting approach, making it clear that his priority has always been the team’s success rather than individual numbers.
Since making a strong impression in international cricket, Tilak Varma has been regarded as one of India’s brightest young batters. However, his strike rate has dipped significantly this year. After maintaining an impressive strike rate of 187.73 in 2024, it has fallen to 143.12 in 2026, with the left-hander facing challenges against quality spin bowling.
His performances during the recent United Kingdom tour also reflected that trend. While he managed a strike rate of 152.94 in England, it dropped to 110.44 during the Ireland leg of the tour, leading to criticism from fans and former cricketers.
‘I Play According to What the Team Needs’
Responding to the growing scrutiny, Tilak Varma explained that batting in international cricket is often dictated by match situations rather than personal intent.
According to the Indian vice-captain, he is capable of attacking from the very first delivery but chooses his approach based on the team’s requirements.
He said that if the situation demands aggression, he has no hesitation in playing attacking cricket. However, if the team requires someone to anchor the innings or bat deep, he is equally prepared to take on that responsibility.
Tilak emphasized that representing India comes with greater accountability, and his role changes depending on the conditions and the team’s strategy for a particular match.

Vice-Captaincy Brings New Responsibility
Following India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reshaped the leadership group, appointing Shreyas Iyer as captain and Tilak Varma as vice-captain.
While the designation may not significantly alter on-field duties, Tilak admitted that carrying the vice-captaincy title has influenced his mindset.
He revealed that when the team management entrusts a player with additional responsibility, it naturally changes the way that player approaches the game. Tilak said he wants to justify the faith shown in him by fulfilling every responsibility expected from the leadership group.
Big Opportunity Against Zimbabwe

The upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, beginning on July 23, presents another important opportunity for the young batter to silence critics.
With India continuing to build a new-look T20 squad for the future, Tilak’s performances will be closely monitored—not only for the runs he scores but also for how he manages different match situations as one of the team’s leaders.
If he succeeds in balancing responsibility with attacking intent, the conversations around his strike rate may soon give way to discussions about his growing influence in India’s next generation of white-ball cricket.
