Unlike traditional cars, the Tesla Cybercab has been designed purely for autonomous mobility. It is a compact two-seater EV focused on ride-hailing efficiency rather than driver engagement, signalling Tesla’s bold vision for the future of transportation.

A Robotaxi Built for the Future

According to the newly revealed details, the Cybercab weighs approximately 1,412 kg and runs on a front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup powered by an AC three-phase permanent magnet motor.

The electric motor is capable of producing around 216 bhp, which may not sound extreme by Tesla standards, but appears perfectly suited for city-focused ride-hailing operations.

Powering the futuristic EV is a 47.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which Tesla claims can deliver an impressive driving range of up to 673 kilometres on a single charge.

If those numbers translate effectively into real-world conditions, the Cybercab could become one of the most efficient compact EVs in its category.

No Steering Wheel, No Pedals

Perhaps the biggest talking point surrounding the Cybercab remains its unconventional design philosophy.

The vehicle completely removes traditional driver controls, meaning there is no steering wheel, no pedals, and no expectation of human driving intervention.

Instead, Tesla is betting entirely on its autonomous driving technology, cameras, onboard computing systems and AI-powered navigation software to handle transportation duties.

This radical approach separates the Cybercab from nearly every production vehicle currently on the road.

Surprisingly Heavy for a Compact EV

Despite its minimalist design and smaller size, the Cybercab is not exactly lightweight.

Interestingly, the vehicle weighs only about 340 kg less than the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range, despite carrying fewer seats and a smaller battery pack.

Industry observers believe much of the weight comes from the autonomous hardware itself, including advanced computing systems, cameras, wiring architecture and safety reinforcements required for self-driving operations.

Reports suggest the battery pack alone contributes a significant portion of the overall mass.

Still, Tesla appears to have prioritised structural durability and long-term fleet usability over aggressive lightweight engineering.

Why Tesla Chose Front-Wheel Drive

One of the more unexpected engineering decisions is Tesla’s use of a front-wheel-drive layout.

Most Tesla vehicles traditionally rely on rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD) systems. However, the Cybercab adopts FWD likely to reduce manufacturing complexity and costs.

By eliminating additional rear drivetrain components, Tesla can simplify production while maximising interior space and efficiency — important factors for a robotaxi designed primarily for urban transport networks.

The move further highlights that the Cybercab is engineered more for practicality and affordability than performance driving.

Production Already Underway

Tesla has reportedly already started continuous production of the Cybercab at its Giga Texas facility.
