Land Rover Discovery Sport’s 11-Year Journey Ends… Production to Stop in 2026 as Company Prepares for Electric Future

Land Rover Discovery Sport, one of the most recognised premium SUVs from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), is set to reach the end of its road after more than a decade in global markets. The company will stop production of the SUV in December 2026, marking the conclusion of an 11-year journey for the model that helped strengthen Land Rover’s presence in the luxury compact SUV segment.

Introduced in 2014 as a successor to the Freelander, the Discovery Sport quickly became an important part of Land Rover’s international portfolio. The SUV was also sold in India, where it attracted buyers looking for a combination of luxury, off-road capability and premium British styling.

The decision comes as Jaguar Land Rover undergoes a major transformation, with the company shifting focus towards next-generation electric vehicles (EVs) and simplifying its future product lineup.

Production to End at UK Plant in 2026

According to reports, production of the Discovery Sport will conclude at JLR’s Halewood manufacturing facility in the United Kingdom by December 2026. The move is part of the company’s broader strategy to prepare for an electric-focused future under its House of Brands approach.

While the production timeline has been confirmed, Land Rover has not revealed a direct successor for the Discovery Sport. This leaves questions about whether the company will introduce a new model in the same segment or replace it with an electric SUV.

Over the years, the Discovery Sport received multiple updates, including refreshed exterior styling, improved cabin technology, upgraded infotainment systems and electrified powertrain options.

A Premium SUV Known for Practicality

The Discovery Sport was positioned as the entry-level model in the Discovery family and became popular for offering features rarely found in its segment.

In several international markets, the SUV was available with an optional third-row seating configuration, making it one of the few luxury SUVs capable of carrying up to seven passengers.

Depending on the market, customers could choose between petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The SUV also featured Land Rover’s signature Terrain Response system, selected variants with all-wheel drive, and the company’s Pivi Pro infotainment system after its mid-cycle update.

Discovery Sport’s Journey in India

In the Indian market, the Land Rover Discovery Sport was offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. It competed against premium rivals including the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, and Volvo XC60.

Although sales volumes remained limited compared to mainstream luxury SUVs, the Discovery Sport built a reputation among buyers who wanted a premium vehicle with genuine Land Rover DNA.

Existing Owners Will Continue to Receive Support

The end of production will not immediately impact current owners. Jaguar Land Rover has confirmed that existing customers will continue to receive after-sales support, including servicing and spare parts according to standard company commitments.

For buyers still interested in owning the SUV, the Discovery Sport will remain available in selected markets until production ends and existing dealer stock is sold.

Another Chapter Closes as Land Rover Moves Towards EVs

The retirement of the Discovery Sport highlights the changing direction of the global automobile industry. As manufacturers accelerate investment in electric mobility, several long-running combustion-engine models are being phased out.
