Team India has reportedly begun laying the groundwork for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, with the management considering a long-term rotation policy for senior players. According to reports, stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and other experienced cricketers could be rested during selected bilateral ODI matches to help build a stronger and more balanced squad for the marquee tournament.
The move comes as India has a limited number of ODI fixtures before the 2027 World Cup, making every series crucial for testing combinations and preparing backup options.
Senior stars may be rotated
According to reports, the Indian team management is planning discussions with senior players regarding workload management and selective rest during upcoming ODI assignments.
The objective is not to sideline experienced campaigners such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, but to ensure they remain fresh for major ICC events while simultaneously giving younger players meaningful opportunities at the international level.
Reports also suggest that the management had earlier considered resting Rohit Sharma during the final ODI against Afghanistan. However, the skipper opted to play, leading to batting-order adjustments that saw Shubman Gill move down to accommodate Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Why India is planning a rotation policy
With only around 20 ODI matches expected before the 2027 ODI World Cup, the team management reportedly wants to maximise every opportunity to develop squad depth.
The strategy is aimed at avoiding a situation where India enters a major tournament without experienced replacements if senior players become unavailable due to injury, workload, or loss of form.
Young talents are expected to receive regular chances so they can gain exposure to different match situations and high-pressure environments before the World Cup.
Young players in India’s long-term plans
Among the emerging players reportedly being considered for India’s future ODI plans is Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is viewed as a strong contender for the World Cup squad.
The management is also believed to be evaluating options for the second wicketkeeper-batter role, meaning established names like KL Rahul could also be rotated in selected matches.
This approach is intended to ensure that multiple players are match-ready across every position by the time the World Cup arrives.

Shubman Gill hints at future vision
Ahead of India’s ODI series against England, captain Shubman Gill underlined the importance of giving younger players enough opportunities before a major tournament.
Gill noted that a World Cup campaign demands consistency over several matches and cannot be approached with an unsettled playing XI. According to him, bilateral series provide the ideal platform to prepare players for the pressures of ICC events.
His comments align with reports that India is focused on creating a squad capable of adapting to different conditions and challenges during the 2027 World Cup.
