BJP’s Tai Tagak Elected to Rajya Sabha Unopposed from Arunachal Pradesh, Here’s Why His Win Matters

In a significant political development from Northeast India, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Tai Tagak has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Arunachal Pradesh.

The announcement came on Thursday after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations concluded with no other candidate remaining in the fray, effectively sealing Tagak’s victory without a contest. Returning officer Tadar Meena formally handed over the certificate of election at the Nokmey Namati Hall inside the State Legislative Assembly Secretariat.

Soon after the declaration, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu congratulated Tagak, expressing confidence in his ability to represent the state effectively at the national level.

“Having served the state with dedication over the years, he now carries the responsibility of representing the hopes, concerns and aspirations of our people at the national level,” Khandu said. He further added that Tagak’s vast experience in public life would strengthen Arunachal Pradesh’s voice in Parliament.

Describing the win as a “well-deserved achievement,” the Chief Minister emphasized that Tagak’s tenure in the Upper House would contribute meaningfully not only to the state’s development but also to the country’s progress.

A veteran figure in the BJP, Tagak has played a crucial role in expanding the party’s organisational base in Arunachal Pradesh. Known as one of the senior-most leaders in the state unit, he has held several key positions over the years, including serving as the state BJP president between 2013 and 2015.

Tagak also has deep roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and has previously served as an adviser to the Chief Minister. At present, he is associated as a patron with the Arunachal Shiksha Vikas Samiti, the state unit of Vidya Bharati.

His unopposed election ensures that the BJP retains its representation from Arunachal Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha, further consolidating the party’s influence in the Northeast.

Political observers note that such uncontested victories reflect strong organisational backing and consensus within the state’s political landscape.
