Aakash Chopra raises concerns despite India’s convincing win

Team India began its T20I series against Zimbabwe in commanding fashion, defeating the hosts by seven wickets in the opening match in Harare on Thursday. While the result gave captain Shreyas Iyer his first international victory as India’s T20I skipper, the team’s Playing XI has sparked debate among cricket experts.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra praised India’s clinical performance but questioned whether the team took an unnecessary risk by fielding only four specialist bowlers. According to Chopra, the strategy placed significant responsibility on all-rounder Shivam Dube, who effectively became the fifth bowling option.

‘India played with only four bowlers,’ says Chopra

Speaking on his YouTube channel after the match, Aakash Chopra pointed out that India’s bowling attack consisted of Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Ashok Sharma, and Ravi Bishnoi, with Shivam Dube expected to complete the remaining overs.

The former cricketer observed that India entered the contest without a genuine sixth bowling option, making it a bold tactical decision by the team management.

Despite those concerns, Chopra acknowledged that the gamble worked perfectly, especially with Shivam Dube delivering an impressive spell. The batting all-rounder conceded just 32 runs in his four overs while also claiming an important wicket, proving his value with the ball.

Faith in Shivam Dube pays off

According to Chopra, asking Shivam Dube to bowl his full quota of four overs reflects the growing confidence that the Indian management has in his all-round abilities.

Over the past year, Dube has steadily improved his effectiveness as a medium pacer, giving India greater flexibility in team selection. His performance against Zimbabwe justified the faith shown in him and helped maintain pressure on the hosts throughout their innings.

Young pacers impress with raw pace

Chopra also applauded Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy for introducing the fast bowlers aggressively during the powerplay.

He highlighted the performances of Mayank Yadav and Ashok Sharma, both of whom consistently challenged Zimbabwe’s batters with express pace. Chopra was particularly pleased to see Mayank Yadav return to international cricket after a lengthy absence, noting that the speedster regularly bowled close to the 150 kmph mark.

Although the young pacers conceded a few boundaries, Chopra said their aggressive intent and ability to unsettle batters were encouraging signs for India’s future pace attack.

India takes early control of the series

After choosing to bowl first, India restricted Zimbabwe to 125/7 in 20 overs through disciplined bowling and sharp fielding.

The visitors then chased down the target comfortably with 40 balls to spare, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

While the convincing victory underlined India’s dominance, the discussion surrounding the Playing XI suggests that team combinations will continue to be closely scrutinised as the series progresses. With several young fast bowlers competing for regular opportunities, India’s management appears willing to experiment, even if it means taking calculated risks.
