‘Don’t Fear Failure…’: Shreyas Iyer’s Powerful Dressing Room Message Before Zimbabwe T20Is Reveals India’s New Mindset
Ahead of the opening T20I against Zimbabwe, India captain Shreyas Iyer has urged his teammates to play fearless cricket, ignore outside criticism, and back young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi despite his difficult international start.
Harare: After a difficult start to his captaincy stint, Shreyas Iyer has made one thing clear ahead of India’s three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe—his team will not play with the fear of failure.
India head into the series looking to end a disappointing run in the shortest format after back-to-back defeats against Ireland and England. While criticism has followed the team’s recent performances, Iyer believes the only way forward is to remain fearless and stay focused on the present.
Speaking on the eve of the opening T20I at the Harare Sports Club, the Indian skipper delivered a strong message to his teammates.“I don’t think they should fear failure because when you have such thoughts at the back of your mind, then you play to save yourself. When you don’t have that fear, you can get the best out of yourself,” Iyer said.
‘Ignore the Noise, Stay Together’
The 31-year-old captain also urged the squad to block out external criticism and concentrate on playing as a united group.
According to Iyer, worrying about public opinion only distracts players from performing at their best.“We don’t have to think much about what people are saying outside. We have to stay in the present. The more we play good cricket and play together as a unit, the better it will be for the team,” he added.
Despite India’s recent setbacks, Iyer insisted the experiences have helped strengthen the team’s bond and believes the players are better prepared to respond under pressure.

Positives Despite England Disappointment
India’s tour of the United Kingdom ended on a disappointing note, with defeats exposing several areas that need improvement. However, Iyer prefers to focus on the positives rather than dwell on the losses.
He believes the squad has learned valuable lessons from the challenging period and expects the players to adapt quickly to the conditions in Zimbabwe.
The captain also warned against underestimating the hosts, saying India must be ready for another competitive series.
Backing Teenage Star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

One of the biggest talking points ahead of the Zimbabwe tour has been the form of 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
The teenager endured a difficult debut series against England, where he struggled against high-quality pace bowling, particularly the short-ball attack from Jofra Archer.
Rather than offering technical advice, Iyer expressed confidence that the youngster has already identified areas for improvement.
The Indian captain believes Sooryavanshi will learn from his early international experiences and emerge as a stronger player in the matches ahead.
A New Challenge for Iyer
Interestingly, the upcoming series marks Shreyas Iyer’s first international appearance against Zimbabwe in either T20Is or One-Day Internationals.
When India last toured Zimbabwe for a T20I series in 2024, the team was led by Shubman Gill, while Iyer was not part of the squad. India went on to win that series 4-1.
Now leading a new-look Indian side following Suryakumar Yadav’s tenure as T20I captain, Iyer will be hoping his fearless approach inspires the team to return to winning ways in Harare.
