Mumbai: With Cocktail 2 already creating strong buzz among fans thanks to its fresh cast featuring Shahid Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Kriti Sanon, the spotlight has naturally shifted back to the original Cocktail the 2012 romantic drama that became a cult favourite.

Starring Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty, the film was praised for its modern take on love, heartbreak, and friendship. But what many fans may not know is that Saif was never the first choice for the role of Gautam.

In a recent interaction, Saif opened up about how the film came his way after several actors reportedly passed on the project.

According to the actor, the makers had already locked Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty for the female leads, but were struggling to cast the male protagonist.

The reason? The female characters, especially Veronica, were written so powerfully that some actors felt the spotlight would shift away from the hero.

Saif revealed that actors like Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor were among those approached before him.

After several discussions and failed attempts to lock another actor, Saif eventually stepped in and accepted the role.

Looking back, the actor joked that things worked out exactly as they were supposed to because he ended up doing the film.

He also recalled having a fantastic time working with director Homi Adajania, calling the overall shooting experience memorable.

Interestingly, old reports from that time claimed that Ranbir Kapoor not only rejected the film himself but had also advised Deepika Padukone against signing it.

Deepika, however, trusted her instincts and that decision changed everything.

Her portrayal of Veronica became one of the most iconic performances of her career, with fans so attached to the character that many started calling her “Veronica” even off-screen.

Ranbir later admitted that his judgment about the film had been wrong.

Now, over a decade later, the franchise is getting a fresh new chapter with Cocktail 2, and expectations are naturally sky-high.

With a younger star cast and the legacy of the original behind it, all eyes are on whether the sequel can recreate the same emotional magic that made Cocktail unforgettable.
