‘Time to Look Ahead?’ Rohit Sharma’s ODI Future in Doubt as Report Claims Lord’s Clash Could Be His Last
A report suggests the Indian selectors are preparing for life after Rohit Sharma in ODI cricket, with Yashasvi Jaiswal reportedly being lined up for an extended run ahead of the 2027 ICC World Cup.
Team India captain Rohit Sharma could be approaching the final chapter of his One Day International (ODI) career, with reports claiming that the third ODI against England at Lord’s may be his last appearance in the format for India.
While there has been no official confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or the player himself, reports suggest that the national selection committee is planning for the future and is unlikely to consider the veteran opener beyond the ongoing series in England.
Selectors Reportedly Eye a New Generation
According to reports, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who is currently with the Indian team in England, is believed to support a long-term transition ahead of the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.
The report states that the selectors want to provide Yashasvi Jaiswal with a consistent run in ODI cricket. The young left-handed batter has impressed with his recent performances and is reportedly viewed as an important part of India’s future plans.

With approximately 20 ODI matches expected before the next World Cup, the team management is believed to consider those games crucial for giving younger players valuable international experience.
Recent Form Raises Questions
Rohit Sharma remains one of India’s most accomplished white-ball cricketers, having guided the team to multiple ICC titles during his captaincy.
However, his recent ODI numbers have reportedly become a point of discussion. Across his last eight ODI innings, Rohit has scored 241 runs, averaging just over 30, with only one half-century during that period.
While statistics rarely define a player of Rohit’s stature, the selectors are reportedly weighing current form alongside long-term planning.
Virat Kohli Still Firmly in the Plans
The same report claims that head coach Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar remain united in their assessment that Virat Kohli continues to be an automatic selection because of his consistent performances and fitness.

This has reportedly shifted the focus onto Rohit’s future, particularly as India prepares to build a squad capable of challenging for another ICC ODI World Cup title.
Retirement Decision Still Lies with Rohit
Despite the speculation, sources suggest that no one within the BCCI intends to ask Rohit Sharma to retire. Instead, the final decision regarding his international future is expected to remain entirely with the veteran opener.
Reports also indicate that discussions surrounding Rohit’s Test retirement earlier this year did not completely align with the selectors’ thinking. While some believed he intended to feature in only part of the England series, those close to the player reportedly maintain that he had made himself available for the entire campaign.
Official Confirmation Still Awaited
At present, the BCCI has not made any official announcement regarding Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, and the reports remain speculative.
With important international fixtures still ahead, the veteran batter could yet influence the selectors with strong performances. Until an official decision is made, the debate over India’s opening combination and long-term ODI plans is expected to remain one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket.
