Pradeep Rawat Dies at 74 After Cancer Relapse: ‘Ghajini’ Villain and ‘Mahabharat’ Star Leaves Behind an Unforgettable Legacy

The Indian film and television industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor Pradeep Rawat, who passed away on August 4 at the age of 74 following a relapse of cancer. Best remembered for his menacing portrayal of Ghajini Dharmatma in Ghajini and Ashwatthama in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat, Rawat breathed his last on Tuesday evening after weeks of hospitalization.

According to his manager Siddharth Tiwari, the actor had successfully defeated cancer nearly four years ago. However, the illness returned around one-and-a-half months ago, leading to his hospitalization. Despite medical efforts, his condition worsened after a sudden drop in platelet count, and he passed away between 6:00 pm and 6:30 pm.

Cancer Relapse Proved Fatal

Rawat had been undergoing treatment since his cancer returned. Speaking about the actor’s final days, his manager revealed that the veteran’s health deteriorated rapidly after complications during his hospital stay.

The news has shocked fans and colleagues alike, with many remembering him as one of Indian cinema’s most dependable character actors, capable of bringing both fear and depth to every role he portrayed.

Funeral to Be Held in Mumbai

The actor’s mortal remains will be kept at his residence in Goregaon, Mumbai, before his final rites on Wednesday evening.

Pradeep Rawat is survived by his wife Kalyani Rawat and their 18-year-old son Vikramaditya, who now carry forward the memories of the beloved actor.

Actor Yashpal Sharma was among the first from the industry to pay tribute, remembering Rawat with heartfelt words and recalling his unforgettable performances in Ghajini and Lagaan.

Soon after the news broke, social media platforms were flooded with condolences from fans. Many remembered him as the unforgettable Ashwatthama from Mahabharat, while others paid tribute to the fearsome villain who became synonymous with Ghajini.
