Madhuri Dixit Opens Up About Being Body-Shamed Early in Career: ‘People Said I Was Too Skinny’
Veteran actress Madhuri Dixit candidly reflected on the harsh judgments she faced during her early Bollywood journey while promoting her acclaimed new film Maa Behen.
Bollywood icon Madhuri Dixit has always been admired for her grace, talent, and timeless screen presence. But long before she became one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated stars, the actress had to deal with criticism and body shaming during the early phase of her acting career.
The actress recently opened up about those experiences while speaking about societal judgment and public scrutiny, themes that closely connect with her latest film Maa Behen.
Currently receiving praise for her performance in the Netflix drama, Madhuri revealed that people often commented on her appearance when she first entered the film industry in the 1980s.
“People Said I Was Too Skinny”
In a candid interaction with News18, Madhuri spoke about how harsh public comments are often an unavoidable part of being a celebrity.
“You’re a public figure. You’re putting yourself out there. There will, of course, be comments coming your way,” she said while discussing body shaming and criticism in the entertainment industry.
Recalling the beginning of her career, the actress shared that many people believed she looked “too skinny” and frequently commented on her physique.
“There were people saying, ‘She’s too thin, somebody should feed her properly,’” Madhuri recalled.
The actress pointed out that women, especially in cinema, are constantly judged regardless of their appearance. According to her, society is quick to criticise whether someone gains weight, loses weight, or simply does not fit conventional beauty standards.
Social Media Has Made Judgement Harsher
Madhuri Dixit also reflected on how the rise of social media has changed public criticism over the years.
She admitted that things were somewhat easier earlier because there was no internet culture or instant trolling. Today, however, online platforms have amplified negativity and anonymous criticism.
Despite that, the actress believes people should learn not to give too much importance to hurtful comments.
“But I believe one has to take these things in one’s stride and not pay too much attention to them,” she explained.
Madhuri further encouraged people to focus on self-confidence, personal growth, and passion rather than constantly seeking approval from others online.
From Rejection to Stardom
Madhuri Dixit began her Bollywood journey with the 1984 film Abodh. However, success did not come instantly.
Several of her early films struggled at the box office, and she often faced criticism for not fitting the traditional image of a mainstream Hindi film heroine at the time.
Everything changed with the release of Tezaab in 1988 opposite Anil Kapoor. The film turned into a blockbuster success and transformed Madhuri into one of Bollywood’s biggest stars overnight.

Maa Behen Winning Audience Appreciation
Madhuri is currently being praised for her role in Maa Behen, directed by Suresh Triveni.

In the film, she plays Rekha, a single mother who reaches out to her daughters with shocking revelations involving their neighbour. The emotional drama explores themes of family, societal judgment, and women navigating public scrutiny.
The film also stars Triptii Dimri, Dharna Durga, and Ravi Kishan in important roles.
Since its release on Netflix, Maa Behen has received positive responses from both critics and viewers. The film has reportedly emerged as one of the platform’s top-performing non-English titles globally, further reinforcing Madhuri Dixit’s enduring popularity across generations.
Even after decades in the industry, Madhuri continues to connect with audiences not just through her performances, but also through the honesty and warmth with which she shares her personal experiences.
