‘Intolerable and unacceptable’: Spain coach Luis de la Fuente blasts Argentina after World Cup final brawl

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has condemned the behaviour of Argentina’s players following the dramatic conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, calling the post-match scenes “intolerable and unacceptable.”

The comments come after a heated altercation broke out on the pitch moments after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time, securing only the nation’s second FIFA World Cup title.

‘These scenes have no place in football’

Speaking to Spanish television after reviewing footage of the incident, De la Fuente said he was initially unaware of the confrontation because he was celebrating the historic victory with his players.

However, after watching the events unfold, the Spain coach expressed disappointment over the behaviour displayed after the final whistle.”At that moment I was not aware of what had happened because I was celebrating with the players, but what took place after the end of the match cannot be accepted under any circumstances.”

He added:”What we saw is intolerable and unacceptable. Players of this calibre, led by a great coach, must also have felt bad when they saw those actions. These are scenes unbefitting of football.”

Spain players praised for keeping calm

Despite the tension, De la Fuente commended his squad for refusing to retaliate during the confrontation.”I would like to praise the conduct of our players in the face of this type of assault and provocation, as they kept their composure and behaved with sportsmanship until the end.”

The Spanish manager said maintaining discipline during emotionally charged moments reflects the values the team wants to represent on and off the pitch.

Mass confrontation after final whistle

The altercation reportedly began while Spain’s players were celebrating their World Cup triumph.

According to reports, Nahuel Molina appeared to strike Rodri in the stomach, prompting defender Eric García to intervene.

The incident quickly escalated into a mass confrontation involving players and members of both coaching staffs.

Leandro Paredes was also involved, with footage appearing to show him grabbing Eric García by the throat before wrestling substitute Gavi to the ground. Thiago Almada also became involved before officials and support staff separated both teams.

Following the incident, FIFA opened a disciplinary investigation into the post-match clashes.

A tense final from start to finish

The fiery ending followed an intensely contested 120-minute encounter.

Spain controlled possession for much of the match while successfully limiting the influence of Lionel Messi, restricting the Argentine captain’s space and cutting off passing opportunities.

Argentina’s challenge became even tougher after Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card during stoppage time of the second half, leaving the defending champions with 10 players for extra time.

Spain finally broke the deadlock through Ferran Torres, whose decisive goal secured a famous victory despite several outstanding saves from Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

The triumph marked Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, capping a memorable campaign and ending Argentina’s hopes of successfully defending the trophy.
