New Delhi: In a significant leadership transition for the Indian Army, the government has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). He will officially assume the country’s highest Army position on June 30, the day incumbent Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi retires from service.

Currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lt Gen Seth brings with him nearly 40 years of military experience, having held several crucial operational and strategic appointments throughout his career.

An alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, Lt Gen Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. Over the decades, he has earned a reputation as a forward-thinking military leader known for his focus on force modernization, battlefield innovation, and strategic preparedness.

A Career Built Across Battlefields And Command Roles

Lt Gen Seth’s military journey has seen him command at multiple levels, ranging from an armoured regiment and armoured brigade to a counter-insurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir.

One of the highlights of his career was leading the renowned Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Indian Army’s premier strike formations. His leadership experience further expanded when he served as General Officer Commanding (GOC), Delhi Area, where he managed key military engagements and ceremonial responsibilities of national importance.

His rise through the ranks continued with command of both the South Western Command and the Southern Command, making him one of the few officers to lead two major operational Army Commands. These assignments placed him at the center of strategic military planning across critical regions of the country.

Focus On Future Warfare And Technology

With global conflicts increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, drone warfare, cyber capabilities, and precision-guided systems, Lt Gen Seth is expected to continue pushing the Army’s transformation agenda in the coming years.

His academic credentials also reflect a broad strategic outlook. He is a graduate of the Higher Command Course, the National Defence College, and has attended the prestigious Command and Staff Course in Paris, giving him valuable international exposure.

General Upendra Dwivedi’s Tenure Comes To An End

Lt Gen Seth will succeed General Upendra Dwivedi, who took over as India’s 30th Army Chief in June 2024. During his tenure, General Dwivedi steered the Army through a period marked by rapidly changing geopolitical realities and increasing technological shifts in warfare.

An alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa, General Dwivedi served the nation for more than four decades and held key appointments across India’s northern, eastern, and western theatres before becoming Army Chief.

As the Indian military continues to modernize and adapt to new security challenges, Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth’s appointment signals continuity in leadership while also reinforcing the Army’s focus on future-ready capabilities and strategic transformation.

The change of command comes at a crucial time when India’s defence forces are investing heavily in modernization, indigenous technologies, and strengthening national security amid an evolving global landscape.
