After years of playing franchise cricket around the world, Jimmy Neesham is set to make a major return to the New Zealand domestic circuit.
The experienced New Zealand all-rounder has signed a contract with Auckland Cricket for the 2026-27 domestic season, marking his first domestic or international New Zealand contract since the 2021-22 season.
The 35-year-old, currently representing Glamorgan in the 2026 T20 Blast in Wales, has made himself available for Auckland’s Ford Trophy and Super Smash campaigns in the upcoming season.
Neesham’s Auckland return gathers attention
Neesham had already featured for Auckland as a freelance player during the 2025-26 Ford Trophy, where he played two matches and scored 61 runs.

However, the upcoming season will mark his first appearance in the Super Smash since 2023, giving Auckland a valuable experienced option in their squad.
Known for his explosive batting, useful medium pace and ability to perform under pressure, Neesham brings a wealth of international and franchise cricket experience to the team.
His return is expected to add significant depth to Auckland’s middle order and provide leadership to younger players in the squad.
Auckland strengthen squad with Adi Ashok addition
Alongside Neesham, Auckland have also added talented wrist-spinner Adi Ashok to their squad for the new season.
Ashok previously trained in Chennai with former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin during the New Zealand winter, gaining valuable experience from one of the world’s finest spin bowlers.
The young spinner had received an NZC Central Contract for the 2025-26 cycle, but was not included in the latest contract list.
Major domestic moves across New Zealand cricket
Several other teams have also made important squad changes ahead of the new season.
Batter Nick Kelly has returned to Northern Districts after spending recent seasons with Wellington, where he also served as captain. Kelly is currently part of the New Zealand squad touring the West Indies.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old all-rounder Snehith Reddy has signed his first professional contract with Northern Districts after representing the Black Caps Under-19 team.
Wellington have also strengthened their pace attack by signing former Canterbury seamer and New Zealand international Henry Shipley following the retirement of Michael Snedden.
The team will also have access to wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway, who remains part of the NZC Central Contract system.
New Zealand stars choose flexible contracts
Earlier reports confirmed that four prominent New Zealand T20I players—Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Adam Milne, and Lockie Ferguson—have signed casual playing agreements with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) for the 2026-27 season.
These contracts allow the players to continue participating in global franchise leagues while remaining available for national selection.
The arrangement follows a similar path taken by Kane Williamson during the previous cycle before he announced his retirement from international cricket during the Test series against England.
A fresh chapter for New Zealand cricket
With experienced names returning and young talents entering the system, New Zealand domestic cricket is heading into an exciting new season.
