Hyundai’s Surprise Comeback? New i20 N Could Return With Hybrid Power and a Performance Twist That Enthusiasts Will Love
Hyundai is preparing to revive its entry-level N performance hatchback, and early details suggest the next-generation i20 N may combine hybrid technology with the brand’s signature sporty DNA.
Performance car enthusiasts may soon have a reason to celebrate. Hyundai Motor Company is reportedly working on the return of the popular Hyundai i20 N, a move that could reintroduce an affordable performance hatchback to the company’s expanding N portfolio.
The development comes as Hyundai looks to strengthen its performance-car lineup in Europe, where the gap between its mainstream models and premium N-badged vehicles has widened significantly over the past few years.
According to recent reports, the next-generation i20 N is expected to be based on the latest i20 hatchback, which recently made its global debut in Brazil. While the company has not officially confirmed specifications, senior executives have hinted that the return of the compact performance hatch is very much on the cards.
Why Hyundai Wants the i20 N Back
The original i20 N, launched in 2021, quickly earned praise for delivering an engaging driving experience at a relatively accessible price point. It became the entry gateway into Hyundai’s performance-focused N division before eventually being phased out.
Since then, buyers looking for N models have largely been limited to the larger Hyundai i30 N and the high-performance electric offerings such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Hyundai Ioniq 6 N variants.
Speaking about the gap in the lineup, Manfred Harrer, President and Head of Hyundai’s Research and Development division, acknowledged the need for a more affordable performance model that appeals to driving enthusiasts without carrying a premium price tag.

Hybrid Power Could Be the Big Change
One of the most interesting aspects of the upcoming model could be its powertrain.
Reports suggest Hyundai is evaluating an existing hybrid setup for the new i20 N. Industry sources indicate the hatchback could use a version of the company’s 1.6-litre petrol-hybrid engine already available in several European-market vehicles.
The same powertrain currently powers the Hyundai Kona Hybrid, where it produces approximately 141 horsepower and 265Nm of torque. While these figures may not sound extreme by performance-car standards, Hyundai engineers are reportedly focused on extracting sharper performance while maintaining efficiency.
The move would also help Hyundai comply with increasingly strict emissions regulations without abandoning the petrol-powered driving experience that many enthusiasts still prefer.

Performance Remains the Priority
Despite the shift toward electrification across the automotive industry, Hyundai insists that driving excitement remains central to the N brand’s identity.
Harrer has reportedly set an ambitious target for the new i20 N: outperforming its predecessor around the legendary Nürburgring circuit in Germany, one of the world’s most demanding race tracks.
Achieving that goal will require significant optimisation of the hybrid system, particularly battery management and power delivery. However, Hyundai appears confident that the upcoming model will retain the playful and responsive characteristics that made the original i20 N popular among enthusiasts.
Hyundai Not Ready to Go Fully Electric
Interestingly, Hyundai’s performance division does not appear eager to transition exclusively to electric vehicles.
Joon Park, Vice President and Head of the N Management Group, has previously suggested that the company intends to maintain a diverse performance portfolio rather than focusing solely on EVs.
This strategy could allow Hyundai to serve both traditional driving enthusiasts and customers embracing electrification.
Rivals Already Waiting
If launched, the new i20 N is expected to compete with established performance hatchbacks such as the Mini Cooper S and the Volkswagen Polo GTI in several European markets.
With hybrid technology becoming increasingly common in the performance segment, Hyundai’s challenge will be to balance efficiency with the engaging driving dynamics that have defined the N badge.
For now, Hyundai remains tight-lipped about launch timelines. But if the latest reports are accurate, the return of the i20 N could mark one of the most exciting developments for hot hatch fans in recent years.
