Reports claim Gautam Gambhir wanted Virat Kohli to return as India's Test captain following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat, before Shubman Gill took charge.

A fresh report has sparked debate in Indian cricket by claiming that Team India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir had urged Virat Kohli to return as the Test captain following India’s disappointing 3-1 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).

According to the report, Gambhir believed that Kohli’s vast experience, aggressive leadership, and proven record in the longest format could help India regain stability during a difficult phase. Although there has been no official confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or the individuals involved, the report has quickly become a major talking point among cricket fans.

The reported move came after India’s challenging tour of Australia, where the team’s performances came under intense scrutiny. The series defeat reportedly triggered discussions about the future direction of India’s Test side and its leadership.

The report also claims that the relationship between Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir had become strained during that period. Differences over the batting order and team selection were reportedly among the key issues, although neither Rohit nor Gambhir has publicly commented on such claims.

Amid the uncertainty, Indian cricket witnessed a significant transition when both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepped away from Test cricket, bringing an end to one of the most successful eras in India’s red-ball history.

Following their retirements, the responsibility of leading the Test side was handed to Shubman Gill. The young batter has since begun his leadership journey by guiding India to a 2-2 drawn Test series in England, a result that many viewed as a positive start for the new generation.

While the reports suggest that Gautam Gambhir wanted Virat Kohli to make a return as captain, there is no official indication that the former skipper considered resuming the leadership role. Kohli has not commented publicly on the speculation.

The reported developments have nevertheless reignited discussions about Kohli’s legacy as a Test captain. During his tenure, India became one of the world’s strongest Test teams, achieved historic overseas victories, and consistently challenged for the top spot in the ICC Test rankings.

As Indian cricket enters a new era under Shubman Gill, questions about past leadership decisions continue to generate interest. However, unless confirmed by the BCCI or the players involved, the claims surrounding Gambhir’s reported approach to Kohli remain speculative.

For now, the focus remains on India’s future under Gill, while fans continue to reflect on what could have been had Virat Kohli returned to lead the Test team once again.
