Gautam Gambhir breaks silence on Rohit Sharma equation amid buzz: ‘He knows my thinking, I know his…’

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has opened up about his equation with Rohit Sharma, offering a rare insight into a relationship that has repeatedly attracted attention since Gambhir took charge of the national team.

Speaking to JioStar, Gambhir made it clear that his association with Rohit did not begin when one became the coach and the other was captain. Instead, their understanding stretches back to their days as teammates, when Gambhir was already a senior member of the Indian cricket team and Rohit was still establishing himself at international level.

“I don’t think so. See, Rohit’s and my relationship was not just of captain and coach,” Gambhir said, recalling that he had known Rohit since the latter’s early years in the Indian dressing room.

That familiarity, according to Gambhir, meant he did not arrive as an outsider attempting to understand Rohit from scratch. He already knew the cricketer personally, had watched his career develop and was familiar with the way he approached the game.

‘He knows my thinking, I know his’

Perhaps the most revealing part of Gambhir’s comments came when he discussed how the pair dealt with potentially different views.

A coach and captain do not necessarily have to agree on every selection, strategy or tactical decision, Gambhir suggested. What matters more is whether the eventual call serves the interests of the team.

“He knows my thinking; I know his thinking,” Gambhir said, explaining that playing together in the past made their later working relationship easier. He acknowledged that a coach and captain could have different ideas, but stressed that the final decision should ultimately be based on what is best for the team.

The remarks are significant because the Gambhir-Rohit equation has been the subject of considerable public discussion during a period of change in Indian cricket. Gambhir’s account, however, presents their working relationship as one built on familiarity rather than requiring complete agreement on every issue.

Relationship goes back years

Rohit Sharma made his international debut in 2007, at a time when Gambhir was an established member of the Indian side. They subsequently shared the dressing room during an important period for Indian cricket.

By the time Gambhir became India’s head coach, he had therefore already known Rohit for well over a decade.

That history appears to have made communication between the two more straightforward. Gambhir said he was neither unfamiliar with Rohit’s game nor unaware of his personality when they eventually found themselves working together as coach and captain.

Gambhir highlights one thing common among India captains

Gambhir also widened the conversation beyond Rohit and reflected on the different captains he has worked with during his tenure as India head coach.

Despite differences in personalities, leadership styles and cricketing ideas, Gambhir said his experience has been that their intentions remained centred around Indian cricket.

“And that is why I said that with all four, whichever four captains I have worked with, this has been my experience with them, that everyone’s intention has been Indian cricket,” he said.

His latest comments also come as Rohit remains an important senior presence in India’s ODI setup. Gambhir recently highlighted the value of having both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli around current ODI captain Shubman Gill, saying the younger skipper is fortunate to have two experienced former captains available to help him on and off the field.

For Gambhir, the message surrounding his equation with Rohit appears straightforward: different opinions need not become divisions. Years of knowing each other’s approach, combined with a shared emphasis on the team’s interests, shaped a partnership that was about much more than the formal labels of captain and coach.
